Well there are certainly a large group of collectors of "cool serial numbers", you can see many people post on this forum and seem to focus on that as their primary collecting interest. Any time someone is "collecting" anything there is someone else selling to him and making money off it.
Yes I have. I use this website as reference. When you open up the fancy serial #s tab you get great info! It's a good website to share with those few who think they have fancy numbers when they don't!
