The coin dealer, The Reeded Edge, has a program in which the customer signs up for an entire date / mint mark set, and then tells the order form the minimum grade (from a list of available grades) they are willing to accept. Then select a payment plan, sometimes as long as two years. As you make a payment every month, they send you a Dansco album and coins. This continues each month until you have the whole set. Has anyone used this service? Do you find their grading to be reasonable? Customer service, etc.?
These type of want list programs have been around for many years for both raw and slabbed coins. I never wished to let just one dealer decide what coins I wanted in the set. It's cool to have a nice matching set if using a Dansco. Even if the dealer is great at grading, the coin may not match the set.
A big part of what makes coin collecting fun is the thrill of the hunt, which would be absent in this approach, where someone else is doing the hunting for you. Also seems designed for complete set collectors, which I'm not. So, for those two reasons, not for me. Your mileage may vary.
It's hard to say. I admit that there are a few times that I bought some entire Dansco albums with mostly, if not complete coins because I found them at a bargain price. I guess it comes down to the price. If the prices are significantly higher compared to if you assemble them one by one, I guess you know what you are after.
Well it depends. Are there fees/interest accoicated with it? Also there is no thrill in the hunt unless you want to find all the coins for a set CRH. And the odds of that will depend on the set but for some it would be pretty close to impossible.
I agree with Maxfli. Building a collection is the fun part of the hobby. It's the journey not the destination. Grading is so subjective, I wouldn't let someone else pick out coins for my collection. That applies to TPG graded coins as well. What appeals to me, may not appeal to another collector. I think you'll get more satisfaction out of your collection if you hand select each and every coin. That's just my opinion.
I agree. If the fun of coin collecting was owning a complete "set", then sets would never be broken up. In fact, sets are nearly ALWAYS broken up to be sold. This proves the collectors themselves wish to find and choose the specific coins for their sets. Actually, I feel a let down once I get the last piece or two to what I am calling a set. I no longer get to pursue them.
that is why I started the Bust $1/2 collection. it'll probably never be finished. also, the chance for a cherrypick.
I agree with Larry on this one. Get your own dansco album and build your own set. Some sets you might what key dates to be a lower grade just so you can afford them - at least in my case. Then you can use various dealers to get the coins - maybe save a few bucks.
Reeded Edge is a well known company that has been around awhile. I think you will find their prices competitive and easy to work with.
Well on the price side here is what I found. Currently I want to start a V Nickel book. So I checked it out on there site and it would cost $1425. Then i went on eBay and found this http://www.ebay.com/itm/1883-to-191...076?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item338852b254 Very close to the same thing but for a lot cheaper.
Well they have to make money, and you are also using basic financing with TRE. So you are looking at some interest and of course proper compensation for THEIR time which the subscriber obviously didn't want to deal with in searching for their coins. Plus there is always going to be a better deal out there, somewhere I agree though. Build your own set.
They very well could be sir. Please do not take this thread as against that firm. Its not against them, more against the idea of using such a service when to most of us the search is the real fun, not the fact of owning a "set". Honestly, most things I own a "set" of sits in my SDB and I never look at it again. It is those coins in which I don't own every one I spend more time enjoying it seems.
The hunt is what make coin collecting a hobby. If you have coins delivered to you sight unseen, you would be taking the fun out of it.
I have a couple of sets I'm working on that, by design, I will never be able to finish, and thus will never have to experience that let down.
One of the reasons I chose Seated Liberty Quarters. I am 27 and that set should give me PLENTY to do for the next 50 years or so. LOL.
Holy crap man. Talk about a glutton for punishment. I used to work on the halves, and that was bad enough. The quarters are simply BRUTAL.
One mans brutal set is another mans life long pursuit. I like the challenge and the hunt and pretty much the fact that I will never have a complete set or a stopping point to 'let me down'. I would be unbelievably fortunate if I was to assemble a set similar to Eugene Gardners recent set that sold.
