As far as Roman is concerned, I prefer to collect late Roman coinage (I know, I'm weird), but I could not pass up this As of Domitian with its very nice remaining detail. I hope the scraping off of his name (and perhaps also that worn down scratch going across his bust) was some damnatio attempt but its probably just simply accidental damage. Domitian, Roman Empire AE as Obv: IMP CAES DIVI F DOMITIAN AVG P M, laureate head right Rev: TR P COS VIII DES VIIII P P, Minerva advancing right, brandishing javelin in right hand and holding shield in left hand, S-C in fields Mint: Rome (struck 82 AD) Ref: RIC 87
An appealing coin! The colour, portrait and Minerva are all very nice. I think the obverse legend reads IMP CAES DIVI VESP F DOMITIAN AVG P M.
I like it V-K!!!! I'd buy it-----It's got eye appeal and just about everything else...and I LOVE the 'bronzes'. (I'm waiting for someone to respond 'Copper or Brass AS' LOL) Good deal coin-bro!!
Wow Jango, that baby has super eye-appeal (nice As!!) Sadly, I only have my one sweet Domitian example (and here it is, again) ... Domitian & Minerva
It's a lovely and interesting coin. I'd be glad to have it. What is the die axis? If it's 6h, the area with scratches on the obverse would correspond with the weak legend on the reverse, from 2 to 6 o'clock. That would suggest the scratches are flan adjustment marks that didn't get erased on account of a weak strike in that area.
87/88 saw the Rome mint produce same very fine portraits of Domitian in a style I would call "Flavian Baroque". Wonderful coin Steve!
Very nice VK. Love the color and the detail. Here are a couple of mine: DOMITIAN AR Denarius OBVERSE: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VIII, laureate head right REVERSE: IMP XIX COS XIIII CENS P P P, Minerva standing left holding spear Struck at Rome, 88-89 AD 3.3g, 19mm RIC 670 DOMITIAN AR Denarius OBVERSE: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG - GERM P M TR P VIII Head laureate right REVERSE: IMP XVII COS XIIII CENS P P P Minerva fighting right with spear and shield atop capital of rostral column, owl at her feet Struck at Rome, 88-89 AD 3.55g, 18.44mm RIC 657 (R )
I just quickly did a re-shoot of the second coin above. The color is off, but at least it is my own images. I will have to do it again when I have the time. Any suggestions appreciated.
Bing your RIC 657 is superb as well as being rare. And it's one I lack! I only have the Minerva types 3 and 4 from that issue.
Thank you. It's a very pretty coin in hand. I just have a hard time photographing my silver coins. Here is one more attempt at that coin:
Great posts and beautiful coins---and it seems Bing has finally overcome the coloring issue on a denarius that I still seem to occasionally have....
