Zumbly, The Gorgon, Nike coins are much more reasonable, than the headless ones, i think i paid $17 for that one.. Steve, we had a bright Sunny day a bit cool, we had frost on the pumpkin the last three mornings, more rain on the way. went fishing out West, Forks(home of twilight), the rivers were up, hooked a Springer, a spring King Salmon, we call Jerry for short, the best eating Salmon, but it got away.
A new pickup, my second headless Medusa coin. Though it's worse than my existing one - the obverse is in pretty rough shape and the harpa and the body of Medusa are largely off the flan - it was a buy for me for a few reasons: 1) I really like these coins 2) It's the first one I've come across from the Komana mint, the vast majority being struck at Amisos 3) Usually, all you get is the outline of Medusa's head, on this one you can actually see her face! 4) The price was good after the dealer kindly accepted a lower offer for it PONTOS, Komana Time of Mithridates VI Eupator Circa 85 - 65 BC AE 17.47g, 27.9mm SNG UK IX: British Museum 1261; Sear Greek 3656 O: Head of Athena in crested helmet ornamented with Pegasos to right. R: Perseus facing, holding harpa in left, and head of slain Medusa in right hand, her decapitated body below gushing blood, KOMA-NΩN across field, monogram on either side.
Jeeze, everyone has a headless Medusa. Now I must get one of these. I see your bronzes and raise you silver... .....of Mithridates VI
You absolutely should... it's got mythology, history, and a headless body gushing blood... what more could you want out of a coin?
Nice!! => sweet new Medusa pickup!! Man, I am jealous of your new coin and also of Doug's sweet coin from Sinope ... sadly, I only have examples from Pontos (*sigh*)
Flock of sheep Herd of cows Parliament of owls Harem of coins in the X6 collection All is right with the world.
Awesome ... welcome aboard, Merlin (I just talked to you in another cool Pontos thread) => Pontos rocks!!
I have a HORRID example... but, "you get the picture"... In this case, PERSEUS is HEADLESS! Pontos Amisos Mithradates VI 109-89 BC AE 28 Athena Perseus Medusa Head Body Fortunately, my Medusa body seems there, neck looks like it is spurting blood... but it looks like SHE got Perseus' head too.
Hello everyone, new here but thought I'd advertise my availability for the headless Medusa club! Just picked up this one, hasn't arrived yet. I probably overpaid considering the bad cleaning job but I just love the design so couldn't help myself.
Hey there, Kaleun! Welcome to CoinTalk. What a great way to de-lurk Your Perseus looks very menacing and Medusa's head has wonderful details! ... I have a couple more of these which I've posted over and over, but since only my first one made this old thread... here they are again All three of mine are from Amisos. Next time I should at least aim for a different issuing city This one came from a jewelry store on St. John in the USVI, of all the odd places. It looked like a trippy black light poster before I cleaned it: And oops, I had no intention of bidding on the next one but when the next coin hit the virtual block it wasn't getting many bids (I guess because of that big gouge on the obverse . I didn't really intend to win it (oh the little lies we tell ourselves). At least it was inexpensive for the type.
1st things 1st, what the heck is "coin stalking"??? (You guys we're joking about it back in 2014 at the top of the thread) 2nd, if there's a club, I want in! Good news for my chances of qualification is that not only do I have a severed head, my coin has 3!!! You can see the double strike easily. But if you look closely you can see it was struck 3 times. (I used the sellers pictures as they are much better than mine) Pontos. Amisos circa 85-65 BC. Bronze Æ 30mm., 18,18g. Helmeted head of Athena right, helmet decorated with griffin / AMIΣOY, Perseus standing facing, holding harpa and head of Medusa, at feet, body of Medusa, monograms to both sides. very fine Stancomb 683-86 (various monograms); SNG BM Black Sea 1166-76 (same). So whadya say, am I in?
