Not sure if you realize it or not but this is the "post a toned coin" thread. Not the "post random crap you found in your pocket" thread.
I tried, but it did not make a straight grade with NGC. Still in the AT holder though. I don't know whether it would stand a chance at PCGS although I have seen some wild ones in their holders from time to time.
How do you mean straight grade? Do TPG companies not like to grade a coin that's toned? I'm no expert but to me it's looks awfully good.
No, TPG companies are more than willing to grade toned coins. One might say anxious even. However they want to be certain (like that is even possible) that the coins were not Artificially Toned. If they suspect Artificial Toning then they will not straight grade it and instead give it a grade such as - UNC Details Artificially Toned. Sometimes they are not sure but they *think* it might not be natural and they grade them - UNC Details Questionable Color. That ASE is a 2002 (I think) and that means that it had 13 years to tone naturally like that in one of those snap tight clear plastic holders with the cardboard insert. They (NGC) decided it was not going to go in their plastic without a details grade. Could it be artificial toning? Sure. Just as it could possibly *not* be AT. It is what it is. The debate over AT vs NT vs MA will continue on, and on, and on, ... well you get the idea.
Some really beautiful coins posted on this thread! Here is my favorite toner an 1884 O Morgan. I hope you enjoy... Bert
