A new ancient coin showed up to the door today from ebay. the seller listed this as Augustus Ae, As.went on wildwinds and went through all listings for this coin. left facing only had one image. so after i looked at it for a while, it came to me " Tiberius" no way. So went to see if there were any Tiberius left face, large S-C coin, oh man ya!! Tiberius 14-37 AD. Ae, As, Obv. Tiberius bare head left. Rev. PONTIF MAXIM TRIBVN POTEST XXllll around large S.C Mint, Rome. 28mm x 10.11g. $46 del. Post any Tiberius or killer ebay win !! I think he looks a like Pete Carroll, Coach of the Seattle Seahawks. I just purchased this a few Months ago. i thought it looked familiar.
I recently saw a 'Titus' being sold as a 'Vespasian', so I 'diarized' ahead to bid at the end of the 10 days. On the tenth day I looked it up, ready to bid my $36 and walk off with my 'win', only to find the bidding at over $100 because two other bidders had seen what I had. "The one that got away."
I don't buy much at all on eBay as far as ancients, but I felt like these were pretty good deals I got a while back: MACEDON. Under Roman Rule. Gaius Publilius, Quaestor. 148-146 BC. Æ 22mm (10.65g.) Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma right . Reverse: GAIOU TAMIOU POPLILIOU legend in two lines within wreath. SNG Copenhagen 1320. Agrippa, Æ As. Struck under Caligula, 37-41 AD. Obverse: M AGRIPPA L F COS III. Head of Agrippa left wearing rostral crown. Reverse: S C. Neptune standing facing, head left, naked except for cloak draped behind him & over both arms, holding small dolphin in right hand & vertical trident in left. I won these in two separate auctions from the same seller. Total was under $30 shipped. The first one was only $1 + shipping because I think most people watching his items were distracted by a few nice denarii that were closing around the same time. IIRC this guy just sends all of his offerings to Agora Auctions to sell these days(no more $1 coins for me ) but I've got some good deals on his stuff there as well.
Great coins Dit is mine Ebay win a wille back!!!!!! Domitian sestertius Tiber R.I.C. II2, blz.: 297, no.: 468. Kampman: 24.126 (7); Coh.: 505; BMC: 377; CBN: 399.
One of my greatest 'bay grabs... 28 mm x 8.19 grams Reference :Hartill 19.14 From Primal Trek "This coin is from the reign of Kublai Khan (Emperor Shi Zu) (1260-1294) of the Yuan Dynasty. The inscription (je üen tung baw) is written in the Mongol script (Phags-pa). The equivalent Chinese inscription iszhi yuan tong bao (至元通宝). The size of the coin indicates that it has a value of "2 cash" which means it was equal to two regular cash coins. These coins were cast during the years 1285-1294." I was really concered with authenticity considering an example in similar condition sold for $3500 from Stephen Album. I showed the photo to a "cash" expert on another board and this is his response. "You're good to go here. Catalog value in Zhongguo Guqian Daji is 1500 Chinese yuan. That values things on the low side. Everything is exactly what it should be including patina."
Ive been lucky with scores like that a few times. Its a nice little high, especially if it is cheap. Nice addition, Eng.
Terrific score, Eng----that 'portrait' sure does resemble Augustus more than 'hook-nosed' Tiberius and I would've 'bet the ranch' it was Augustus as well ( By the way, I don't own a 'ranch' LOL) I haven't been on eBay for a while, but my 'nicest' score was getting a seller to drop down on his purchase price for a sestertius of Maximus, making it a very sweet purchase...
Awesome coins and story's, thanks. Masternoob, those cash coins all look the same to me! MZ, awesome details on that Sestertius!! Beauty Ro! red-s two great coins! Tc7 i lose more than i win!!
that's a good ebay score ENG! i'm buying less coins on ebay now than i used to. for me, but i am going to give it a scan now just in case. does still seem good for bargain bin snags.
I've never seen this one. Can you provide a link to others lacking TI? It can't be anything else but I would have expected the date to be earlier. My three are ordinary types and legends.
only coin this week I put in a "reasonable" bid ended up getting away ebay god probably though that was too much to ask for. Funny thing is, I actually bid quite a bit more on that galba than the combined cost of these, which was ~$300 including shipping.
I think the goddess of 'Fortune' on eBay figured those four for about $300.00 put you WAY over the plus column 'brass'
Wow Z it sure looks Augustus to me, i didn't see any reverse on wildwinds for this Augustus. looks like i'll have to change my notes.
Wildwinds often isn't exhaustive. I like to hit up CNG and acsearch as well... they often throw up results that you don't find on Wildwinds.
Actually, I have the same type hopefully to be in the mail and on its way to me soon . Seller's pics...
Beautiful coin Z, i wish all my coins had this much detail!! wildwinds seems to on and off most of the time.
