Ebay Sellers, tell me about this......

As a buyer on Ebay, never been a seller, there is a hover to zoom feature where a buyer can examine photos in exploded view. I love this as most all details can be viewed almost as being in hand. Searching for varieties is also much easier with this feature. I have come to avoid most listings that I can't use this or it isn't available having become privy to the game of intentional blurry or washed out photos. Tell me, if you are a seller, can you turn this feature on and off? If the seller has the switch and it is turned off, should the seller be avoided like the plague?

It is not a switch that a seller can turn on or off. It is something eBay automatically does that depends on the size/quality of the original image. And that depends on how the seller took the photo (camera, did they zoom in, etc). Also eBay sometimes glitches and the feature just doesn’t work-I’ve had that happen where it just would not work even though it had worked on other photos that I took using the exact same technique.

I would definitely not avoid sellers just because this eBay feature does not work since they don’t have much control over it. As long as the person’s feedback is good and the price is reasonable to you, I’d still buy.

eBay changes stuff all the time, but from the time they added this feature until the last time I sold there (a year or two ago), it was exactly as @ddddd described it. I agree 100% with what he posted.

I've sold on ebay before. When I post pix of what I'm selling, I add an additional $1.00 for larger pix. When you set it up that way, buyers can view up close as the OP indicated. If I didn't add the additional $1.00 for the larger pix, the zoom function doesn't work. That's why some will have this function available while other's don't.

At least that's how it was during the time I sold on ebay. The last time I sold anything on ebay was maybe 2 - 3 years ago.

Here's an example. This add doesn't have the "hover to zoom" function.

This one below does have the "hover to zoom" function:

I've never paid extra for larger photos, and I've always gotten the hover-to-zoom function, as long as the photos I uploaded were large enough to support it.

    Edit:

This seems to indicate that the upcharge lets people expand your image within the search results page, so they don't have to click through to your item. That might be worthwhile, but I've never used it. As I said, AFAIK you can always zoom the images on your item page -- unless the feature happens to be broken at the time you're looking.

Whether you use a camera or a flatbed scanner, just use a high mega pixel setting and this feature should work just fine.

Like everyone else said, the feature is not an on or off. I would also like to point out (and I saw a post about it here very recently) that they often take a chance with some of the blurrier photos and more times than not, they've gotten lucky. They did state about being able to return the product if it's not described. If you play that game, just remember, most sellers select the option to enable returns at the cost of the purchaser. Which makes total sense if you are a seller.

At one point, a successful SNAD claim always went back on the seller's dime. I don't know if that's changed.

When I complained to one large, well known, seller that I couldn't enlarge to examine their photos, their answer was the amount of space the feature takes wouldn't allow it for the volume of photos they posted. Just what they said.

Yeh. That’s a whole game in and of itself. I do my best to take the best pics possible and call out all the flaws on the coin to avoid a pissing match between a buyer/ebay and myself. It’s tough to do any kind of business on ebay. Lots of risk.

Next time I set up an auction on ebay, I'll be sure to take note and see if it mentions the "hover to zoom" option. The option I always use, which costs an additional $1.00 is the "Jumbo Pix" option.

    Update:

I just googled it and this is what Ebay has on the "Hover To Zoom". It is actually "Gallary Plus" and not "Jumbo Pix" as I had first mentioned above.

    Gallery Plus
With Gallery Plus, you listing's main image will show in search results with a larger picture.
    Gallery plus offers:
    • A larger picture, up to 400 x 400 pixels, when you hover over the item in search results. Otherwise, your picture is shown at the standard size of 96 pixels
    • A magnifying glass and Enlarge link
    • Access to all of your pictures in search results, if you have multiple pictures
