Vic, If you ever get the time and the chance, you need to do a coin hunting trip to rural Pennsylvania. You'd see how ridiculous that line is. My estimate of the percentage of high end classic coins that are slabbed is less than 10%, maybe significantly less. People here are funny. They'll buy 4-figure and 5-figure coins but won't have them slabbed because it costs too much. I know you disagree, but either way, think about what that difference in our perceptions means when we look at population reports. It makes them not worth the electrons' movement to me, much less paper and ink. By the way, I just filed this entire thread, all 7 pages of it, in my "Why I think PCGS is a stinking joke" file folder.
I kinda agree. The more opinions on a given subject, the more informed that makes you. Even if some of the opinions are useless and irrelevant, at least you have done your due diligence and sought more than your own thoughts on a subject. Who knows you might even learn something and adapt your previous prevailing thought.
Same with my local shop. I have seen 6k to 40k raw coins. And it just depends on the dealer. I use several I do not mind buying raw from certain dealers - in some cases you can make money by getting them graded. Case and point - I bought a raw 1879 AU shield nickel for $700. Got it graded by PCGS as AU-55. Last one sold for $1400. I have done this with a few coins - from HJB and local shop. There was one pocket-vest dealer at the local shop one day. He told me he searchs a bunch of shops just to find some of these gems.
