I wonder if we'll ever get over the artificial distinction between so-called Classic and Modern Commems and just refer to them as Commemorative coins and the period from 1955-1981 just becomes "The Interruption".

Welllll.... Maybe more respect coming from you than from him. Just a little. Dismissiveness, even when accompanied by humor, retains a certain unremovable stain of ugliness. Hey Mike, did you ever get around to joining the Chicago Coin Club? I did. Great meeting format. Unlike any other I've ever seen.

I agree. To rule out one or the other on these broad categories isn't looking at the coins.

Agreed. I don't own any "modern commemoratives", although there are some nice examples such as the Smithsonian that I will acquire in the future.

May I also recommend, from the viewpoint of pure beauty in design, both the Dolley Madison, and the Community Service, particularly in the BU (non-proof) variety? Stunning work.

Purdy though, REAL purdy. :woot: I think I remember that Dolley was a Tiffany & Co. design.

And, wasn't the Community Service dollar obverse based on an original design by Saint-Gaudens?

Well, the obverse WAS a standing figure of Liberty, and you pretty much can't swing a dead cat without hitting a St. Gaudens Standing Liberty piece. And with a wreath on the reverse, how retro can you get?

The Smithsonian dollar had the Goddess of Knowledge on the back, but that was before she lost her job to Wikipedia. Or wait, maybe PCGS CoinFacts. Double :rolleyes:.

Sure is purdy. The ones who categorically conclude miss out. Leaves more there for the rest of us. :)

I like those too. Especially Dolley Madison, the modern bust dollar!

Yeah, I was gonna go there, too, but I was struggling to get away from a cruder characterization, so I punted. :bag:

Danged bloody hell......one should never have to punt in reference to modern commems. Eddy? You're shaking my moral sensibilities......

Oh, Kenneth, Kurt just overlooked my big grin at the end. I've got nothing against modern commemoratives. The only thing some people don't like about them is they're modern. But the way I see it, if they weren't modern, they wouldn't be modern commemoratives. :)

Nah, it's crummy MiFi bandwidth. Sometimes the emoticons don't load right away.
