    image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Hello everyone
This coins just arrived this morning. I had posted the listing photos the night I purchased it. There's something off about the coin . It's really clean but doesn't have hairlines that you would expect if it had been cleaned. So has it been dipped ? Looking at the coin under a loop it appears to look wet from all the luster. That's what makes me think something's wrong. Comparing it to other coins it's has a wetter look to it . I have a ngc barber dime that also looks similar it's almost a blast white coin with this wet look. I have no idea if this is ok or would be considered a problem coin. The ngc coin I mentioned that looks similar is straight graded with no problems. When I say it has this wet look I understand that this is the luster but comparing to say a MS mercury dime the luster looks different. Any opinions ? image.jpg

Look like you where right on this one Tom. It does look cleaned but doesn't have any hairlines at all. I've went over it several times with a 10x loop. This wet look that I mentioned it what got me. The coin seems to be covered in luster. So would it grade or be a details coin ? Should I return it ?

If dipped, unless it is rubbed after cleaning, it may not have hairlines

IMHO, the coin you have as avatar has luster. The coin you posted is shiny but no real luster.

Cleaned enough to strip luster or overdipped.

I'm taking photos with a phone so I can't get a good detailed pic. If that's not luster than what is this luster looking stuff all over that's making it look wet ? I understand you really can't see what I'm talking about from these photos that's why im trying to decribe it best i can. Like I had said earlier this ngc coin I have looks a lot like the surface of this coin ..It's au53 so are you telling me neither coin has luster? I'm confused about this.

image.jpg image.jpg Here's the listing photos if they help. This last photo if you look below the chin and around the nose. Whatever that shiny luster looking stuff is .. It's all over the coin. This is what Im saying makes it look wet . image.jpg

Polished... That would cause the lusterless shine...

I appreciate the opinions guys. I can't get a better photo and it seems that you guys don't understand what I'm saying . I have several coins that have been cleaned polished you name it. They are so shiny they will blind you. This coin has something on it's surface that looks just like luster only wet looking. That's the best I can describe it. The only coin I have that looks similar out of 100+ slabbed barbers and close to a thousand raw is one barber dime graded by ngc AU 53. The graded coin also has this cleaned look with this funny looking luster.

I decided to send the coin back. I just dropped it off at the post office a bit ago. Only thing I can think was wrong. Is the coin had been dipped to the point that it some how affected the surface and possibly that's why it had that wet look. Either way it just wasn't what I was expecting. This is the first coin I've ever sent back but I feel I could use that 20 bucks on a coin that I know is original. Thanks for posting

Perhaps I am wrong, but I take luster to be the selective reflection of light from a coin such that when you rotate it in the light you get a cartwheel effect. Your avatar appears to have that, the coin you posted looks shiny, but not lustrous (sp). Whizzing can cause that, but is usually accompanied with lots of polish marks. Good move to return it, there are better out there.

I was in to big a hurry to find another coin. I've had these 4 coins that I've been wanting to submit for a while now but need a fifth coin. I guess I've learned my lesson with that coin. I'm going to have to slow down and wait till the right coin comes along. The listing photos of that coin wasn't good and I took a change. It turned out to be something I didn't want. Just have to be a bit more picky on the next one.

Not all coins that have a wet look are whizzed or cleaned or dipped. I have a 1943 Walking Liberty Half in MS-66 that when I first received it, looks wet. The luster is just incredible. It also may be due to a late die state, which my Half is. The metal flows slightly differently as the die get's towards the end of it's life. Over dipping a coin is supposed to remove luster not add to it.

But in the end, you did the right thing.. If you not happy with it, return it, if that's an option. I had a 1944 Mercury Dime that I posted on here. It's was in a PCGS MS-67 holder. I did not like the die polishing that was evident next to Liberty's face, or the weak strike on the back. I returned it and bought a 1942 MS-67 NGC holdered dime. I am totally in love with it. In fact, I honestly can't believe it did not make FSB. I'll take a photo of it soon and get some opinions on it.
