Julian II AE3, Arles mint, 360-363 AD, 1.9g, 17mm OBV: DN ILVIAN-VS NOB CAES, Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust right. REV: FEL TEMP-REPARATIO, Soldier spearing fallen horseman who is wearing a helmet, reaching backwards. Mintmark: TCON? REF: Pending There is a spelling error on the obverse. DN ILV... should be DN IVL.... By process of elimination I got the mint mark TCON but I am not 100% sure of it since there is only the top of two letters.
Another coin on my want list - I've got a couple choice examples of Constantius II and one barbarous, but none of Julian.
No not difficult to obtain at all, but they all seem to be flatly struck. Yours has more detail on the reverse than I've seen. I'm holding out for one that has copious detail, but perhaps it doesn't exist. Maybe they were all weakly struck.
It's actually quite good - plenty of detail on both sides and clear legends. There's a handful for sale on FORVM now that don't look half as nice - they're sort of typical.
I agree with JA, your coin is really quite good!! I have a few of Julian...those of the FH are weakly struck and very low grade---my better examples have a reverse with a wreath and Vota---- Reduced Follis with an SIRM mintmark:
I think I'll try to reshoot my other Julian II fallen horseman. It has the old scanner photo and it doesn't look good that way.
My one coin of Julian is also of Vota type - it's rather average, but it came in a mixed lot. I didn't actually seek this coin out.
I have a votive type in worse condition than that coin but yours ain't bad. The patina is peeling off of mine.
Gil. I rarely shop in this period of time, but even so, here are a couple of mine: View attachment 413842 View attachment 413842 View attachment 413843 Nice pick up
I think he's re-imaging coins that are already in his collection. Good stuff, guys. Your bull is VERY nice, Bing.
I am reshooting a lot of coins but this one was never shot before. It was sitting in my desk for over a year.
