..of any reputable ancient coin, specifically medieval, dealers that use eBay? eBay is a great source for a beginner collector of ancients such as myself to get some pretty decent coins at a fairly reasonable price - - considering the shop or dealer you purchase them from are legit and reputable. I have purchased a few coins from eBay from a few different dealers, but would like to know if there are any other good ones out there that any one here uses or knows of. And or better yet, any other sources besides eBay you all purchase from. Thanks for any and all replies!
this guy is a CT member ... https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ebay-auctions-ending-tonight.263722/.. i've bought from his ebay listings with no problems..
There are many on this forum who just might disagree with this statement. As a beginner, do you think you know enough to spot a fake? Or to know if a particular coin at a particular price is a good buy? Until one is sure enough, perhaps beginners should stick to reputable dealers or known sellers. Sorry but I am unable to answer your question since I do not generally delve into medieval coins, only Ancients such as Greek and Roman.
Very true and valid point, Bing. My statement pertained to the fact that as a beginner, like myself, we may not always know where and how to find and get in contact with coins sold through these legit dealers. And not to mention typical prices on coins sold through these such dealers are a bit above 'retail' price, due to the fact you are not only paying for the coin but the dealers reputation and knowledge as well. eBay allows beginners and veterans alike bid on particular coins in hope that you can purchase coins at a reasonably lower cost if lucky, as to why i feel it could be a great source to purchase ancients, considering the person selling them are legit.
Don't get me wrong. I buy from Ebay and there are really good, reputable dealers who sell on Ebay. Forum Ancient Coins comes to mind. Just be careful. As a new collector remember there are too many unscrupulous sellers on Ebay ready to pounce.
I buy from Ebay sporadically and I'm very cautious for fake coins and especially ones that are over-priced. Gotta watch that too. Some dealers can make coins look "better" in the photograph but they ain't as good as they seem.
Everyone has given some excellent advice for one who is just starting out in any area of numismatics... I was always told to read the book before buying the coin---a reference to know as much as you can before purchasing---and that includes the source of the purchase. Auction houses also allow you to view previous sales, so you can get a 'feel' for the current retail/market prices and be comfortable feeling you are not typically overpaying but purchasing at a fair price----and perhaps score that bargain in the process.
I like the guarantee offered by the sellers on vcoins (but I'm sure that you pay a bit of a premium for the peace of mind, but "to me" it is worth the extra cash ... others may like to gamble a bit more and tread in slightly riskier waters?) Note => make sure that the e-bay dealer has a sweet return and/or guarantee policy (don't make yourself an easy mark)
One other drawback to eBay, if you happen to buy out of Bulgaria or Romania or Turkey, etc., they may be looted antiquities, and subject to confiscation for years to come. Even our FBI has a presence in Eastern Europe to monitor the trade. The coins are genuine, but you did not acquire good title when you bought them.
Here are some sellers that routinely auction off authentic coins at low starting bids. Most of the coins are low to mid-grade, but I've found quite a few interesting pieces from these sellers. Holding History SJB Coins Frascatius Cody111111
I can vouch for these sellers as well. And while we're at it, add Agora Auctions (not Ebay seller). Usually reasonable starting bids.
Another good seller on eBay is Mortown. You won't get any great deals but he is very polite and his stock is genuine. He is especially helpful with beginners.
