i picked this coin up the same time i got my recently posted postumus coin. i wasn't even aware of the type, but the same seller it for less than 30 bucks...it "wowed" me when i first laid eyes on it.. so i threw it in the cart as well. CELTIC GAUL. Leuci. Boar Standard Series, 1st century BC. Potin Unit O: Celticized head R: Boar standing, ‘mountains’ below. LT 9155 18 mm 3.2g here's map of from wikipedia of where the leuci hung out, middle right, modern lorraine... i wonder if those "hills" on the reverse are the "vosegus mountains"?
Castulo. Semis i see a Bull, with a L and cresent not sure what is in front of his chin looks like a € 5.55 gr 20 mm i have no reference yet.
hi oki, those are cool coins... check out this coin on vcoins, it is described as a "palm frond". http://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/ser...rescent_artistic_portrait/549870/Default.aspx but this one describes it as an iberian letter... http://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/apo...e_half_unit__male_headbull/47531/Default.aspx oh yeah, and post any celtic coins you would like!
Since both Bing and I appear to be focusing on our respective collections in very similar ways, we have trouble finding a little more room in our budgets for cool Celtic coins like those posted by you guys (Oki and Chrs)----but we'll get there eventually guys!!
hey, i had seen one before, i "liked" this one last october, i'm surprised i didn't remember it. so this coin may not be of the leuci tribe? i'll note that on my flip.
I should have made note of where I read that information, but I have it recorded as: CELTIC, High and Middle Seine 1st century BCE "Bald Head" potin, 17.6 mm, 3.4 gm Obv: bald head left Rev: boar standing left; below, three semicircles stacked on the exergual line Ref: BN 9100, Mon XV 989 Note: often attributed to the Leuci tribe, this type now seems to be classified as as uncertain, Seine. Admittedly I don't know much about Celtic coins.
Cool coin TIF!!! I do love the variations of the Celtic coins---from highly stylized to the types like you and Chrs posted....completing a 'collage' of them by style and tribe/region should be impressive and filled with eye-appeal!! Sounds like a JA project, or have one of 'you' already done so???
Having only three Celtics so far, I haven't made a collage. There are perhaps a half dozen types I wish to collect. At this juncture, the primary appeal is simply that they are so odd and abstract. Maybe someday I'll develop a deeper interest.
Wow chrsmat => very cool new Celtic Gaul addition (a sweet celtic boar, eh? ... nice) I have a few Celtic coins (I'm sure you dudes know them by now, but I never get tired of letting them out for a Celtic play-date!!) Macedonian Under Philip V & Perseus (Celtic) 187-168 BC Strymon & Trident Celtic Gaul, Senones AE Cast Potin 100-50 BC Celtic head & Celtic horse with pellets Celtic Tribes of Gaul, Coriosolite Class IIB 80-50 BC Celtic Head & Celtic Horse with Boar => congrats again, my friend (cool new score!!)
Hey chrsmat, curious? => is your new baby a "cast potin"? (my 2nd example has a similar type of look to it, yes?) ... just wondering
Wow Chris you went on a spree. Excellent post!!! I like the three arched hill, it's soo, well, Satrapish!
thanks everyone! steve, i don't know if it's cast or not, i don't think it is but i'm not certain. i wonder who the "sonic the hedgehog" fellow is on you cast celtic coin. he shows up quite a bit on celtic coinage. yes! i thought exactly the same thing.
