RARE US MINT PLASTIC DIE CAP FOR 1986 1oz SILVER STATUE OF LIBERTY COMMEMORATIVE

I guess the idea is that this is a piece of plastic that capped a die during a strike, but I'm not sure exactly how that would leave the plastic as intact as we see it here. He's got another one that claims to be from a Washington quarter strike.

I was about to dismiss the whole thing, but it looks like he's got a wide selection of legitimate error items. So, is "plastic die cap" an actual thing that error collectors look for?

Somebody left it in the car during the summer [peak temp was 115] and the coin capsule melted.

Seems like mint employees would have noticed something was amiss there when they tried to put it into standard mint packaging. So how did it leave the mint through proper channels?

I think they mean it is the protective covering for the die, a moldable flexible plastic covering that protected the freshly made die after manufacturing. It would be removed and discarded when the die is readied for use.

    Just a guess :)

Whether anyone wants to buy it... I'd say no but people have collected stranger things :D

TIF nailed it, that is what it is. A cap used to protect the delicate surfaces of the proof die until it is put into service.
