I copied, pasted the list and removed the statistical information. I've also compiled a list of the rulers I need now. I've omitted a lot of them that are probably impossible for me to obtain. Some of these I may not get either. 41 Titus 43 Nerva 50 Philip II 77 Clodius Albinus 79 Carausius 80 Herennia Etruscilla 81 Crispina 85 Aelius 91 Allectus 92 Germanicus 94 Florian 95 Pertinax 96 Pupienus 97 Herennius Etruscus 101 Zeno 103 Procopius 105 Decentius 106 Vetranio 107 Otho 109 Diadumenian 111 Valentinian III 113 Balbinus 114 Julia Soaemias 115 Julia Paula 116 Orbiana 117 Antonia 118 Aemilian 119 Hostilian 120 Vabalathus 123 Nero Claudius Drusus 124 Pescennius Niger 126 Julia Titi 128 Marius 129 Didius Julianus 130 Livia 131 Agrippina I 133 Magnia Urbica 135 Paulina 138 Quietus 139 Aquilla Severa 140 Eugenius 141 Gordian II 142 Gordian I 143 Johannes Blue means I have the coin, red means the coin is on it's way to my house, green means the coin is a Roman Provincial substitute. Plain black means I need that ruler. Post those emperors, rulers, wives, children that I don't have yet. If someone already posted that ruler, feel free to post one as well. Let's fill those slots up again like we did the last time in December. My rarest ruler is Romulus #144 Romulus, son of Maxentius, AE Follis. Rome mint, ca 309-310 AD, 6.0g, 23.0mm OBV: DIVO ROMVLO N V BIS CONS, Bare head right. REV: AETERNAE MEMORIAE, Domed shrine without columns, RBP in ex. REF: RIC 207 Rome, Cohen 6. Here is my 100th ruler that marks the milestone!! Macrianus II, Usurper, 260-261 AD. AR Antoninianus, Antioch, 21mm, 3.1g OBV: IMP C FVL MACRIANVS P F AVG, Radiate cuirassed bust right. REV: SPES PVBLICA, Spes standing left holding flower and raising hem of robe. Star in left field. REF: RIC V-2 13, RSC 13, MIR 1743b, Sear88 3093.
Daunting list, to say the least...and I seem to have obtained a similar number but of different types. According to your list, the rarest I seem to have (and you don't) is Magnia Urbica---and one I have duplicates of that you are still searching for is Hostilian:
Congrats again! From this point you should probably do a celebration thread for every new 10 rulers you acquire.
Congratulations! Out of curiosity, did ERIC provide any info on how that list was composed? Glancing through, it mostly matches what I've seen, but there are a few bits that seem a little strange. Like Domitian II has two known coins, and Leontius I has at least three, but the latter is listed as rarer here.
The rarity list is based on how many coins of Roman Imperial emperors were submitted to CoinVac and Tantalus. The list is also based on how many coins of an emperor, not the reverse types or varieties. The amount of coins submitted to those sites is impressive indeed but it is a small percentage of what's out there. As the database grows, it may be possible to know more about the rarity of certain emperors. I don't completely understand how the list was generated other than how it's supposed to be for the number of coins out there.
=> the Rarity List that Gil-galad is using is from a sample-size of 233,056 coins found on ebay and auction-sites (sure, it may not be a large enough sample to hang your nice hat on, but it represents one sweet data-point that we can use for our own collecting purposes) ... Note: David Sear's rarity values are another data point to help us determine which of our lil' gems may be on the rare-side of the masses => fantastic milestone, my friend (100)
Does this list match what is published in your copy of ERIC II? Mine was a very early copy (one of five sent to this country for review) but shows only 202 rulers. Certainly there is no Leontius who was Byzantine and not included in ERIC II. It makes no difference in either case. I doubt that there are 200 listed here who have a coin not in a museum.
This is the revised list and is not in ERIC II. Rasiel Suarez updated the list around December of last year. I know there are a couple slots that will be impossible to fill because there are only a handful or less examples out there. Some are in a museum. In my case, I only wish to see how many I can obtain. I have passed my original goal of 100 rulers.
Thanks for the comments guys. Although, I'm hoping to see some of those missing rulers like we did the last time. That was a huge success indeed.
