Did your parents collect coins, Grandparents, etc. collect coins?
Im not counting if your parents bought one mint set the day you were born, or saved a few bicentennial quarters. Someone that actually put time and effort into collecting.

It skipped a generation in my family, like @micbraun. Both my mom's parents collected.

Using the LCS definition of a collection, I'm a first gen collector. My grandmother's collection would be considered an accumulation...but it was her interest that got me started, so I consider myself a second gen collector.

My grandpa collected in the 60's and 70's. He died suddenly in 1981 when I was very young. My grandmother sold off all but his best stuff over the years. She kept a decent, but cleaned, type set. I then inherited it in 2012 and have been hooked. So, there was a 31 year gap in collecting.

An uncle collected, and was quite serious, but I am the Lone Ranger in my family.

Grandpa collected semi-seriously. He had a handful of Morgans, lots of wheats, rolls of unc cents, nickels, etc, some coins in holders, some raw, a incomplete merc dime set in a frame, and so on. My parents didn't collect. Guess I'm second gen, but who really knows if our relatives a hundred years ago collected?
