Don't Get Your Hopes Up For Good Quality On The Roosevelt Dime Sets!!!

Picked up my first 5 sets at the PO today. The others are on the UPS truck and will hopefully be here by about 3:30 EST. The quality is terrible on too many of the coins. Just two examples of the dimes out of ONE SET of the 5 I got. Notice the spotting all over the face of Roosevelt. WHAT THE??????? Polish, bad planchet, the guy putting it in the capsule sneezed? And the other dime, a nice chunk out of the face of the coin. I just don't get it. Don't these people inspect the planchets before striking them and then check them again for defects? Is this what we will get from the mint for years to come? I sure won't be sending my sets in for grading unopened only to get 69 or less on the grading. A total waste of money. Have one of the dollars with a huge glove type fingerprint..or maybe it is just a fingerprint...over a large area of the nice shiny surface in another set. Maybe about 5 million letters to the director of the mint about their quality would help but probably not....he is just another bureaucrat paid by our taxes!

Those are just the two I took pics of. I shudder to think what the other 5 will look like when they get here today. Maybe I'll take pics of all the flaws and post them in here later. I will definitely call the mint and get them to pay for return shipping. The guys who got them back ordered months from now just may luck out and get better quality coins......or they may get the rejects that get sent back. No telling.

This. There's no way the mint will melt them down and start over.

Do any of the coins look like they could be 70's? Post a couple pics of your best ones if you get a chance.

I'll go over them again later when I have more time and take pics. The problem is the capsules have all sorts of little hairs inside of them...the same as the US Marshal coins had...so sometimes it's hard to tell unless you open up the capsule and carefully blow all the crap off the coin to see what it really looks like. The gouges you can see easily on the coins.

Thanks for posting. I was thinking of sending the sealed package in for grading but going to open it open now. The dimes still get the special label. Looks like 70's might be tough to come by.

You got that right. The quality has gone down ever since. I never had to send back any coins til several years ago. I have to send back some silver proof and Unc Eagles.

Vote with your wallet. Return the coins. The worst thing you can do to an organization that delivers inferior quality is to accept it.

I tried to talk to a mint official at the FUN show. He was just standing there in the morning with no crowds or anything to do. Man, all I got from him was hyper defensive answers completely ignoring any point I was trying to make, simply regurgitating answers he was taught. I thought before maybe it was just a lack of understanding. Now I am positive they simply DO NOT CARE about anything collectors have to say. They will do what they wish, irrespective of the hobby. The only thing at this point they will notice is lack of revenue. So, I have now sworn off any US issues until I see a change at the mint.

Hopefully your not referring to blowing with your breath since it does contain tiny drops of moisture which can corrode.

I always use an ear syringe (bulb) and I'm hoping you use the same or something similar.

My 2 sets should arrive today and I'll draw my own conclusion.

As for the bad coins? I expect that mechanical processes are used somewhere in the minting and packaging of modern proofs as well as computerized inspection.

Lately it appears as if folks are always "hoping" for good quality coins.

It certainly seems this way. Thankfully, the coins from their past will always be of the high quality that coin collectors have become accustomed.

Of course everyone wants good quality coins. I am sure machines don't put the coins in capsules and proofs should always be eyeball inspected due to the representation of the high quality. I had no real plans to send in any of the coins for grading, just selling the extra sets and keeping a couple for myself. But to see such poor quality again and again makes me wonder who is in charge there now.

The people at the shows usually are NOT the director and asst. director of the mint, so unfortunately they don't really care what you have to say. People need to send in pictures of the quality they are getting to the director of the mint...or maybe their legislatures....and show them the crap that is coming out and see if maybe...just maybe...someone can get them to clean up their act. Maybe it's time to cut back on how much they put out and focus on quality instead of quantity.

So for 75K mintage and maybe 5% will be MS 70. This will make some rich.

That's what you get for trying to shirk the 5 order limit.

That's a higher percentage than ought to happen. 70's SHOULD be rare--not the expected result.

Yeah....they send the defects to the folks who get away with breaking the 5 order limit.

I might be in the minority, but I think the less 70's the better over all. They would not be rare if they were all perfect. If there are not many of them, we all have a chance to strike it rich depending on what we get!

Of course the Mint doesn't care. No one in Washington demands even a speck of accountability from the bureaucracy. In turn, it provides lousy service.

Speaking of lack of accountability, this is what your tax dollars are paying for:
