I bought a Roman Republican denarius I thought would be a cinch to ID even though it is in rough condition. The legend on the reverse is readable as "P SERVEILI M--". For the life of me, this coin is not the easy coin I thought. All the references on line show a coin with the Dioscuri reverse as C. Servilius M.f. Denarius, but the obverse shows a wreath. This coin shows a lituus behind the helmeted head of Roma. Help will be greatly appreciated

Hey TIF. I was afraid someone would say that word, but I think you are correct. This coin was practically free so I'm not so worried. This was one of those I did prior research and couldn't ID it at that time so was intrigued. Curiosity killed the cat.

True, but the similarity of names makes me think the fraudist (is that a word? fraudulent artist :)) simply mixed up his Serviliuses.

Also, the fabric doesn't look right nor does the lettering, which has a very modern cast (pardon the pun).

Usual disclaimer: I am often wrong :D

It looks cast to me as well, but I feel sorry for Bing. Strike two.

I've never known you to be wrong.

Don't feel sorry. And this is much beyond strike two. I have often gone out on a limb only to find the coin was a fake. However, in all but one case did the seller's give me a refund without a fight. In all cases I received refunds.

Both the Nero and this RR were purchased knowing full well they might be fakes. It's one thing to buy a coin believing it to be genuine and then finding otherwise. That was not the case with both these coins.

Well, TIF and JA make me believe it is probably a 'cast' as well----but then again, I thought your Nero coin was genuine....

    Please disregard this message LOL

Is this a coin for sale? There are too many similarieties to include the mark on the hind quarter of the left horse. The coin I posted is 3.3g, 18mm.

I don't know if it's a fake or not Bing.

Here's a pic of my M. F. Servilia for comparison. My coin has the same reverse of the Dioscuri galloping in opposite directions, but the obverse is quite different.

MF Servilia 1; Rmn Rpblc BC 136
    Silver Denarius; 21mm/3.9 g
    OBV: Head of Roma
REV: Dioscuri Galloping in opposite directions
