I just got this 1921 Morgan in the mail. While looking over it I noticed what appears to be a crack along the cheek starting at the hair line and moving towards the eye. I need the eyes of experts like yourselves so take a look. Thanks DSC08421.JPG DSC08422 (3).JPG DSC08422 (2).JPG

If you mean crack as in Die Crack then no. It's a Scratch. A Die Crack would be raised.

This is what I'am wondering about. I can take the tip of a needle and insert it into the area near the hair.

That doesn't mean anything. My guess is that the scratch was caused by a staple. If it was a crack, it would be raised because the planchet metal would fill the void.

I hope you didn't pay too much for it.

Why are you putting sharp needles to the face of your coins? I think I might know how the scratch got there now.

Here is a simple definition and picture - Die cracks on coins are caused by a shallow crack in the die. The crack actually creates a thin recess in the dies surface and during the strike the planchet metal fills in the recess. Die cracks are common on all U.S. Coin series.

Explain? If you put sharp object to your coin, the coin could get scratched. Did that really need an explanation?

No I wanted to make sure I understood. I should elaborate. I took the needle and did not scratch the coin. I used it to see if there was a clear gap on the coin, which there was. That is all. Your sarcasm towards me was not necessary. I'm not stupid as to try and scratch the coin it was an inspection of the break. Got it.

Ah if my short term memory is correct, Mike Diamond just had an article in Coin World about serious fat die cracks. Think it was last months. 1 mm or wider.
    go check it out---

And yes you learned, Die cracks are raised not a void on coins.

The word 'void', would describe what see in this coin down by the hair line. There looks to be a split in the piece which is difficult to get a real clear picture of.
