The edge lettering for the Proof Coins was applied during the minting process via a 3 part collar.

At some point in time, the 3 collar pieces were inserted into the press in the wrong order creating proof error coins.

I think, but cannot be sure, that this error occurred with the Jefferson Proofs.

The above page confirms that this only affected the Jefferson Presidential Dollar Proofs.

    Seriously?

    No.

The number produced is unknown and could literally be thousands of coins.

    From the Small Dollars Page:

"Measures have been taken to prevent this type of error from occuring again. In a March 2008 statement, the mint estimated that as many as 100,000 Jefferson proof dollars were struck with the edge inscription out of sequence."

Whomever made the ?million dollar" statement didn't qualify it very well.

Do the three collar pieces last the same amount of time the dies do before replacement? Would they replace the dies and collar pieces as a set once worn?
