This Buffalo is a nicely toned coin with nice eye appeal. I purchased it last week at the coin show I was working. The dealer from whom I purchased it from for the most part we have had a decent business relationship. However I have had now two issues with him. The first was a Nickel three cent Piece. I had seen it at a show a week before I purchased it.The following week I made the purchase and once I got home removed it from the 2x2 found it had a bad gash across the bottom of the roman numerals. He never smashes the staples on the 2x2 and the gash was a staple scrape. Since I had opened the coin I knew I was the owner. I did however say something to him about this. That he kind of blew it off.... Now this coin in question the 29 S Buffalo. Once again he's has put a coin out there that by any means is a nice looking coin however it has two rim dings up over Liberty! so yes it has issues and that said it should of not been sold as a coin with no issues. The reason I missed this is because he always uses the smaller 2x2's that are really 1.5x1.5. and the coin fills the window so you truly don't see the rims fully until it's removed. As luck would have it I did notice the dings before removing the coin. So as it stands it's not open. I did however scope the coin and I believe it to be an 1929 S DDO! I'll post some images and see what you think.{ Remember the images are shot through plastic.} Should I keep it with the damage, or return it. Since this is a raw coin I would grade it as an AU toned . The DDO PUP is the date and ribbons to me the date is an DDO. coin. I do plan in to once again address him on not reveling damage or coins with issues. As we won't do business again unless I can remove the coin from the holder and view it before making a purchase. I will also add this was shot with a scope not a camera, and the space shown between the coin and edge of the window looks larger in the image. It has also lost a lot of the true color of this coin. As it has a nice rainbow copper greenish tint.
because it was listed wrong on both if you do a CPG search you'll see that it was first listed as an 29 but later changed to a 29S. first listed as an FS-05-1929 -101 (016.8) now changed to an FS-05-1929S-101 (016.8)
It also was listed wrong in Treasure hunting Buffalo Nickels by Wexler.Pope,and Flynn it also has an URS of 5 9-16 known
From what I can find, it was listed wrong as an S mint and has been changed to P. I can't find anything that recognizes the 1929-S. The doubling on every image I can find is fairly strong, on the east of the date. Your full image of the date doesn't look the same as that listed in the CPG 5th Edition. In the book, the right side of the "2" is doubled all the way down to the crossbar. Yours isn't. Chris
If you take a look at the CPG in the comments on this coin it states.... "Listed in error in the third Edition as a Philadelphia mint coin. " it also is pictured with an 1929 S Buffalo
No thank you Jay as I wanted input and people to research to base a theory on. I'm still in yes it is boat. As from what I can see in hand. I just need to think about dealing with the dealer. As I'm not happy about the rim dings. Any one whom is in the coin business should know damage is not good. And should not pass it along unspoken .
Here are my thoughts: Your pics make the rim dings look minor enough that the coin might holder problem-free. If you can get it in TPG plastic at an AU+ grade, with the variety attributed, given the rarity of the variety, you might have something, if you're ever interested in selling.
