Awful idea. You don't know what you are signing for and see my insurance point above. I have had a post office lose a package once it arrived to my PO but didn't make it to the box. It was found a month later.
Lee, the Post Office supposedly will allow you to use their physical address to get around this or at least that is what they advertised at one point.
I've lived in an apartment for years. If you have a home or an apartment, I don't see the difference. The postal workers will see the regular packages coming through either way. I've read several times to keep your hobby discreet, use po boxes, etc. I do the opposite. Everyone at work knows I collect, all my wives friends know, little packages are left in my box, etc. Fortunately I have a loud dog. Most of my expensive stuff is at the bank. Got a lot of stuff at home, but if it's stolen, oh well. There are pluses to telling people. For example, I sold over five thousand silver in US coinage for my wife's friend, and she let me keep the collectible stuff. The rest was bullion value junk.
I live in an apartment and my mailbox is more secure than most peoples house mailboxes are. The items get left in a locked box which is behind a locked door that only the mailman/residents have a key to open. That and there's cameras everywhere also. I've also never had anything stolen even though UPS and FedEx just leave packages on my back porch which anyone could go onto and take. Although again there are noticeable cameras everywhere but I do live in the city and cameras don't usually stop people intent on stealing. I don't really care what my mailman sees that he delivers to me as anything reasonably valuable goes into the safety deposit box at my credit union which is like 10 minutes away from where I live anyway.
Times have changed......when I worked at UPS leaving packages at an apartment complex was verboten. Always a signature required.
I recently got a P.O. Box purely for coins because I do a lot of eBay as a buyer and seller. I think the PO Box is great, the only real downside is increased number of trips to the post office and they can be really slow at times.
This sounds like a service that allows them to LEAVE a package (like at your house) that you would normally have to sign for. It isn't needed it you have a P O Box because you have to go to the widow to pick up the package anyway. And if you don't have a P O Box I wouldn't want them just leaving the package sitting by or even in the mailbox.
That depends on your location and the size of the box. We pay $45/yr. for the smallest available. Best to check with your local P.O.
I understand and appreciate the convenience of a P.O. Box. To me, its an extra added layer of security. In saying that; I don't have one. I have a safe (bolted into the floor), numerous cameras (some hidden) and a .357 Magnum revolver w/Hollow point rounds. If someone wants to steal my coins...I invite them; but the results may not be in the best interest of that individual. I guess I like the feeling of going to my mailbox and finding those little "treasures" each and every day. JMHO. Thank you and enjoy what remains of your day.
