I found this 1999-D Georgia quarter after I received my change from the grocery store. It is filled with black all throughout the coin and it looks very detailed. Can anyone inform me on what this means or if it is just very dirty?

I can say positively say that it's not an error and that it was not milled at the Mint that way. Could of been a bored person with a black marker who got creative. But thanks for sharing.

Thank you! I was so confused when I found it and I figured I would see if I could get more info.

You will sometimes find tavern owners who will paint quarters black or red to use in arcade games and pool tables when a customer loses their money in the machine. Since the machines are leased, the tavern owner would want to be reimbursed for coins used in this manner before the profits are split.
