It's actually held in Plantation and I went yesterday with my little brother for a couple of hours and we had a great time, especially my bro. Nothing pricey on our budget but we both got some ancients and my bro also got US and some foreign, some of it given free to him at the kids table (he's 12). Here is what I got. First two are from the higher end dealer we went to (he had primarily US some ancients), the rest I picked from a small junk bin another seller who mostly dealt with modern foreign. I'll try to add attributions when I have more time later. Was only able to shoot the first two before my camera died, so the rest was shot with my phone. Constantine I, Rome mint Manius Cordius Rufus, Rome mint Leo I Valentinian I or II (bought it thinking it might have been a Val III but some quick research disproved that, I like the retrograde N in the obverse legend) Justin I imitative(?), with Chi-Rho reverse (pretty much why I got it) Nabataean? I don't exactly know, not even sure why I bought it lol
Of course my favorite is the first coin shown, Constantine I, but I also have a soft spot for the RR coins such as your new Rufus. Congrats on them all.
Nice finds! I've come across some neat bargains at mostly-modern-foreign dealers. Most of the bigger ones have at least one book of ancients, or a grab-box that they just want to unload. The last is indeed Nabataean, Aretas IV. That's the ligature of heth and resh between the cornucopias, the first two letters of his name: HRTT, or Haratat.
Nice pick ups VK. I'm going down to Florida next week, Cocoa Beach to be exact. Anyone know of any decent coin shops around there? Even Orlando?
Nice => great pickups, Jango ... stevex6' favourite => Manius Cordius Rufus (I like the cool double-headed obverse)
I really like the Rome Constantine portrait. Also that Leo has all five obverse letters - nothing too common there! I see no profit in tracking the Valentinian to which ruler if it is imitative. They could have been looking at anything and not necessarily a reverse that belonged with the obverse. I'd say it is probably meant to be Val. II as much as anything because Val. I's head should divide the legend at the top.
Thanks all for the comments and likes. I just love the portrait on the Constantine, has a clear Roman nose too. A nice example of this type from Rome was on my wish list and am glad I got one. Didn't even consider the Val might be an imitative, thanks Doug for pointing that out. Cool my first Nabataean (surprisingly my phone doesn't threaten to autocorrect that!)! I'm gonna look up Areas IV. Thanks John! I think Brian of Bargain Bin Ancients is based someplace near Orlando IIRC. Not sure if he has an actual shop though (although one of his shipping methods is "walk-in" so I assume he has one).
I am in it for the Constantine and the Leo!!!! I need a Nabatean...and now its starting to get to me.
I get a Nabataean before you Anoob, the shah of eastern coins? I find that hard to believe! (Although I know you'll more than make up for it with a much, much better example)
That one is pretty good, actually - centered on both sides. These minute bronzes of Aretas IV come in a seemingly endless number of varieties, but none of them are very well struck or preserved. They were minted rather hastily and circulated for a good century...
nice mix..i like to see some coin diversity! welcome to the C. R. club! i have the same nabatean inbound myself, i'll join the aretas iv club shortly...i hope.
