I have a binder with your typical 4 columns by 5 rows to hold 2x2 flips. I don't particularly like how "flimsy" the pages are when I turn them. Do they make pages that have more "bulk" to them? Am I making any sense or should I go drink some caffeine and come back?
I understand exactly what you mean. The biggest problem I encountered with the standard pages is that the fit is real snug when a 2x2 is first inserted, but once you need to remove it for photos or to add other coins, it becomes very loose. As a result, it doesn't take much for the 2x2's to slip out. Eagle Coin Holders makes hard plastic pages for the 2x2's, and each slot has a plastic strap across the face to keep the 2x2's in place. These pages are not cheap, and the brittle plastic can eventually crack from continual use. Another alternative would be to buy zippered portfolios (notebook) for the standard pages. When closed, these notebooks hold the pages firmly in place. I've used all of these methods, but I prefer this one the best. Chris
Lighthouse makes a similar page to the one from Eagle. You can get these at Wizard Coin Supply http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/
There's a zillion kinds of zippered (3-ring) binders. Here's one: I would not carry a cellphone or tablet, etc., along with the coins. The coins are a target, and carrying electronics means they get your data and identity too.
Like @doug5353 said, there are many different kinds. The ones I have were purchased quite a few years ago and do not have all the extra pockets. I got mine from Eagle Coin Holders, but I don't know if they still carry them. All I can suggest is that you keep looking. Chris
Do you actually need an album? I have a Lighthouse 100 slot 2x2 box that seems to work really well. http://www.lighthouse.us/epages/lighthouse.sf/en_US/?ObjectPath=/Shops/leuchtturm_us/Products/KRBOX
I keep some of my coins in 3 ring binders in the 2x2 pages. Some are in 2x2 flips & the 2x2 cardboard mylar. I made a heavier cardboard front header page & a last heavier cardboard page for protection & support. The pages get heavy from the weight of Half Dollars & Silver Dollars. I have also found the Whitman 2x2 Red Boxes to be handy storage, also.
As far as I'm concerned, Lighthouse makes the best collector's products on the market today, hands down. The only problem, if you want to call it that, is that being a European (German) company, their holders are not 2" x 2", they're 50mm x 50mm which is 0.8mm smaller than 2". If you have coins in 2" x 2" holders, they won't fit easily in the Lighthouse (Leuchturm in Europe) holders. They have also officially partnered with Intercept Shield and offer the Intercept holders in many millimeter sizes to fit any size coin you might have. This is what I use for my type set:
As you say, not entirely without issue - but as I bought Lighthouse holders, no issue for me. I like Lighthouse products - they work well and look nice. That said they are about the only choice we have in Europe. I also favour the square capsules in the wooden boxes and use those for the more valuable coins.
Two observations; #1 if you bought a binder or notebook wider than normal (there are many), you could shelve the books with the rings at the top and prevent distortion of the 20-space pages, as they would "hang" from the top and not reach down to the shelf. Not a great solution, but feasible. And #2, a good paper cutter could nip 1 or 2 mm off the side of your 2x2's, and they would then fit easily (but still be slightly too tall). I have a big old heavy-duty paper cutter I use constantly, especially while packaging and wrapping shipments.
This is what I do with my bindered coins. It distributes the weight evenly across all of the rings, and eliminates the problem of the coins' weight putting extra stress at the top ring when shelved conventionally. Also, it probably helps that I use zippered binders, which are extra wide and leave plenty of room for the pages to hang freely.
I do not like vinyl pages at all, upright, sideways, or diagonal. Too much danger of PVC contamination. I use 2x2 file boxes and Mylar-containing flips and cardboard 2x2's. I also use Lighthouse capsules a fair bit. Vinyl (soft) is the natural enemy of coins.
Can't speak for others, but I use PVC-free pages made for archival storage of photographic transparencies. Easiest way to store coins in cardboard 2x2s.
First time poster here. I don't think the pages I use are any more sturdy than the basic ones already mentioned. But I use the BCW non-PVC pages here: http://www.bcwsupplies.com/cat/coin-supplies/coin-page/pro-20-pocket-page-100-ct-box These "Slotted Paper Pages" may be worth a look though. They appear to be a stiff paper board product. I had not noticed that they sell these until today: http://www.bcwsupplies.com/cat/coin-supplies/coin-page/slotted-page-2x2-black-12-coins-slides
I sell the BEST 20-pocket coin pages that exist on the market today, and believe me - I tried them all! The pages I sell are very sturdy, PVC-FREE!, with a thumb hole on the bottom. For more info - PM me!
