I was fascinated with the story about the girl on the Lativa 5 Lati Coin; how she was the symbol of independence for this country during the WWII Russian occupation. It is a beautiful coin. I found this ICG MS-63 specimen and had to have it. These coins are not so easy to find in higher grades. Enjoy the pic.
Partially true. The first occupants were soviets (1940-1941), then germans (1941-1944) and since 1944 soviets again. Keep in mind that Stalin and Hitler started the war together. To avoid total off-topic, one coin from my collection:
Partially true. At July 22 1940 Peoples Parliament of Latvia (Sejm) proclaimed creation of the Soviet Republic of Latvia. And at August 5 1940 Latvia joined to Soviet Union. There is a perfect analogy to accession of Texas to the USA.
