I was fascinated with the story about the girl on the Lativa 5 Lati Coin; how she was the symbol of independence for this country during the WWII Russian occupation. It is a beautiful coin. I found this ICG MS-63 specimen and had to have it. These coins are not so easy to find in higher grades. Enjoy the pic.

 

Pardon me. But during the WW II Latvia was occupied by Hitler...

 

Partially true. The first occupants were soviets (1940-1941), then germans (1941-1944) and since 1944 soviets again. Keep in mind that Stalin and Hitler started the war together.

At July 22 1940 Peoples Parliament of Latvia (Sejm) proclaimed creation of the Soviet Republic of Latvia. And at August 5 1940 Latvia joined to Soviet Union. There is a perfect analogy to accession of Texas to the USA.

1936 British Penny in fair condition with dark coloring
And, a photograph of the man who smuggled them out of Latvia in 1940.

 

Any thoughts on these coins? Should I have the 5 Lati graded?
