I stopped in to my credit union yesterday to deposit some money into my account. I decided to ask for some penny rolls while I was there. I normally just get 10 rolls, since that is usually all I have time to look through. First they asked if it was for a business or just personal. I told them personal. Then they told me they needed a nickel per roll after 5 rolls. The only reason I do this hobby is because it is essentially free, minus the coins I pick out. So there was no way I was going to pay for rolls, so I just took my 5 rolls and left. Anyone else experience this?
Yes. Some banks/credit unions tell me up front. My favorite bank told me they were going to start charging me just over $0.10/roll. I told them to stuff it. (not really, but I did stop getting rolls there)
I've asked this before, but apparently it needs to be asked again....and again.....and again. Does anyone remember when the air pump was free at gas stations? Chris
If you live in an area with them, all Casey's General Stores still have free air pumps. And no, I have never been charged for rolls of coins.
Sooner or later, it will probably happen. The SQ program attracted about 10 million new collectors to numismatics, and the skyrocketing rise in the price of silver just fueled the roll-searching activity. Eventually, it will probably come to pass that all banks will charge a small fee for people who have only one purpose for getting rolls......hunting for coins. It's ridiculous for roll searchers to assume that dumping their searched rolls at some other bank will protect them. So, John dumps at Bob's bank, Bob dumps at Rick's bank and Rick dumps at John's bank. What goes around, comes around! The banks still have to bear the expense of re-rolling them. Chris
What if you say it's for business and not personal? Do you still get charged? I would go back the next day and get the other 5 rolls
There was a time Mcdonalds in NYC would ask the customer if they were going to eat in or take out. If I said eat in they would charge a "eat in tax' which was noted on the receipt. So the next time I went I just said 'take out' then took my bag and sat at any table I wanted free of that tax!
As a member of the credit union, wouldn't you expect them to charge for rolls of coins? Your "dividends" are based upon cost-savings and profitability of the unit. Charging for the rolls is good business sense. The only people that seem to complain about these fees are the same individuals who don't trust banks and keep minimal balances in their accounts. If you say it's for business, they'll likely ask you for your tax license and business registration (depending on your state's laws). Then they'll inform you that you need to open a business account. I don't mind paying a bit more for eat-in at McDs, however, personally, I think they should charge for the take-out bags. Also, if I were the manager of the McDs location charging that "tax" (which likely wasn't a tax, so much as a fee), I would instruct employees to ask any customer without a tray to give up their seat for customers with trays who were looking for a table. It's unfair to expect McDs to provide AC, complimentary wifi, cleaning, refills and the general real estate for "free" when they decide to charge a fee for those services.
True.. Don't forget the stale buns, dirty restrooms, fully overloaded garbage stations, loiters in the entrance asking for change, homeless sleeping inside, and wrong orders.. like I stated I live in NYC and I see it all the time!
Yes I remember when air was free at the gas station. Also I remember water being free too. They sat right next to each other.
