Beware of Larry Briggs and his company! I sent a gift of more than 45 years ago from my great grandmother to him so I could get an insurance estimate for the piece. He calls me 6 weeks later saying his desk was a mess and he LOST my coin. It was a RARE encased postage stamp 1862 Kirk Patrick and Gault. This coin started me collecting coins and was the most valuable heirloom in my entire family. He not only lost it he avoids talking to me. I told him I wanted $5000.00 as this was fare for the condition and rareity. He said he would maybe give me $400.00. This was a national treasure and so important to me and my family and now its gone. If you send anything to this company be prepared to loose it.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.
I, and I'm sure others here, wish you had come here for information before sending it there.

I'm sorry that you have lost something of such sentimental value, but you have to realize that you can't expect someone to accept the worth of an item based on sentiment. Unless you can come up with comparable auction listings to substantiate your $5,000 claim, you will have to accept that there will be some negotiation in the settlement. I don't know of any major grading service that hasn't had this happen, but I think it is foolish to assume that they are doing anything improper. We're all human, and Edit happens!

This is true Chris but he avoids me and has no intention of taking care of it.

Understand that I am not taking sides here. Not yours and not Briggs. I'm only sharing an experience. Irregardless of what I believe about his slab, ie grading, I do like the design and strength of his 'slabs'. That said, I have entrusted many valuable and rare "keepers" to him for encapsulating. The value and rarity of which far exceed the market value of your encased postage stamp. I understand that losing something sentimental can be frustrating. I have lost, to a burglary, many valuable and sentimental things. All that said, I'm sorry for your loss and would suggest negotiating a reasonable value. And, for goodness sakes, be careful of slandering someone.. you could lose again.

Nothing I type here is going to make you feel better. I hope you get a proper resolution to your problem. ie: he finds what you sent him and returns it to you in the same condition you sent.

He may be avoiding you because you are asking $5000 for something that sells for between a few hundred dollars and up to maybe $1,500 in good shape, depending on the denomination of the stamp. If you had the more common 5 cent denomination, and it's in good condition, the $400 offer is fair market value.

I believe Larry Briggs is an honest guy. It's sad that something like this could be lost but he only owes you the market value of the item. I would think he would be offering you a small amount over market.
He may already be doing that.
None of us have enough information to say what the actual value is. As Chris said, auction prices are your best bet on finding what folks are paying for these.
If you have images of the item, I'm sure someone here can help you search auction prices. I really hope Larry can find it and return it to you.

My brother asked me the same thing. I sent an email to them in fact I can share it with you if you like stating they would be honored to grade my coin. I have sent coins to PCGS and almost did, guess I should have. I am so upset at them but my last conversation with them I told Larry I would take the $400 he offered so I can move on. Its been 3 weeks and this is why I posted this so no one else gets there coin stolen.
Thank you for your reply. I did talk to him quite often and told him I just wanted to move on and please take care of it. I even said I would accept his unreasonable offer of $400 just send the check and I would forget about the whole missfortune. I really think he is trying to find a replacement but its not like a 1909svdb there are very little of these known. Thanks again

Thank you for your reply. I tryed everything to resolve this with him. I told him I would take his low offer of $400, he said he would send out a check right away. No check 3 weeks later. I was offered $700 and 2 years ago offered $1400. I am not out to hurt anyone I just want people to be aware of this incedent so it dosent happen to anyone else. I do have great pictures of both sides and it is a great idea to send it to this site I just have to figure it out. Unless I can send the pictures to you? Thanks again, Rick

Hi Rick. It's easy to post images. In the reply box that you are already using, click the "upload a file" button at the bottom of the box and select the image files you wish to post.
