Lot of talk of ugly Salonina, one of my new coins. Salonina was the wife of Gallienus. Salonina Augusta. 254-268 AD. Egypt, Alexandria Billon Tetradrachm( sellers notes) Dated year 15 267/8 AD. Obv. diademed and draped bust right. Rev. Eagle standing right, wings displayed, holding wreath in beak, palm over shoulder. L IE (date) in right field. Milne 22mm x 9.8g. Very pretty woman... Why i picked this coin it go's well with her Hubby, Gallienus.Eagle reverse.
These are cheap and would love to own one myself, but being potin and my luck with them and bronze disease, I havent bothered & probably never will. Could have scored one for $22 last year, nicer then yours, but didnt. :/
Mat i have about 10 of these and i watch them as well as all my coins very close because of what you said about BD, so far so good.
I've had my share of BD problems as well. Especially on that Romulus coin. It's looking really promising so far.
You're right Eng, Alexandrian coins make an exception about Salonina beauty or ugliness. Her portraits there are often flattering Q
nice ENG! his and her alexandrian eagle test! schwwwwwwwwing! i still have my last two tets out on my desk, can't quite put them up yet...love the in hand feel.
I am often found petting my ungraded coins and muttering about My Precious.... I love these Egyptian types - I think a well documented - well organized collection of them would be striking. Im not too familiar but, are there any Emperors or variations that are Uber expensive - im talking 1952 Mantle or 1954 Aaron tough? Baseball season is coming -though im a Hockey guy but, alas who knows but, me what a Gretzky OPC RC goes for
If the one extant bust of Salonina is accurate, she wasn't exactly pretty in a feminine sense, but not homely either - just a bit stern.
