1849 LG Cent possible error/variety

I have had this lg cent for a couple years and always have wondered what was up with the extra lines inside "OF" in USOA leged. To me it looks like remnants of another letter or number in side the Real one.
What do you think?

To me, it looks like two punches have raised a ridge between them.

 

How would that give it this appearance?

 

See the two dark dimples in the "O"? Imagine a crater with raised ridges around it. Now imagine two of them next to one another. I'm not certain of that, but that what it appears to me.
