@Paddy54 I'm not seeing the misplaced date; can you show an example of what one of those would look like? I looked up an example with a misplaced "1" but my coin does not seem to have anything like that.

Just proof like. I noticed the reverse had some Proof qualities the first time that you posted it. Proof of the era were exceptionally well struck and very seldom showed any sort of weaknesses. Yours is pretty nicely struck, but not proof struck.

Thank you for the reply! So, what areas would you say are the giveaways to tell that the strike is weak/not proof quality?

Generally speaking the obverse stars are a dead giveaway on business strike seated liberty coinage. Beyond that, the rims should be well defined from the denticles. If the merge together somewhat, chances are that it is not a proof. I don't have any images of any of my proof seated quarters, but here is a twenty cent piece and dollar that may better illustrate the fine sharpness of proofs of the day. Both are PR-64 CAM. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

I will show you some tomorrow , look under the 6 in the denticals it looks from your image there's something there. SLQ are famous for MPD as well as the year 1876 in all seated coins.

The proof coins have square rims , your reverse doesn't . I doubt that the obverse would lose it's proof fields with such little wear . But I'm not an expert on proof coinage , especially impaired proofs . So hopefully some of the proof guys will chime in .

Beautiful 20 cent piece . Nice to see a proof coin so the real design sticks out .

Looking at your images, I thought I seen something in its denticles. I was not sure as your image was not clear enough to be 100% sure. I just wanted you to check in out in hand as this series and date are known for having MPD's. below I have up loaded a few images to study. both have MPD's. however MPD's can be other places other than the denticls on a coin. They can be found in the skirt on this series. They can be found in the neck on an IHC ,are just a few examples of locations to look. your coin is the second image. I copied it and tried to enlarge and point out the area in question. 1876 date 2 crop.jpg 1876 SLQ Test.JPG 1889 IHC misplaced date.jpg

Rusty if you really want to see what you're missing yes in deed you do. If variety type coins are not your interest then I say no. Coin collecting is an individual thing. Yes we all share out interest in the hobby as a whole. But we all go and seek out our own interests . As a YN my interest was filling a book. Yes to complete a set. These days I tend to go after items that interest me. No longer driven by filling holes. But driven to find new varieties and research the reasons these varieties exist.
To me collecting there is no set rules, no limits , you collect to fill your enjoyment not holes.

So are those scratches seen on the obverse from your photo on the coin or just slab?

Good spot Paddy! I used to the OP's picture to see if I could resolve anything else. MPDs are hard to photograph (your shots are great), and I also see some strong possibilities on this coin...nice spot! :)

There are some scratches on the observe only visible under certain angles (the photo makes it look worse than in hand).

The areas I circled in black and yellow aren't really noticeable on the coin, even under 30x magnification; the photo seems to exaggerate them.

The date was a give away as 76 seated coins are known for mpd 's

IMG_5274.JPG enlarge this image and look at the red arrows. You'll see the tops of the numbers in the denticls
