In the mail today, I received the Part I catalog from Stack's Bowers for the Pogue Collection. Just browsing through it quickly, the coins are phenomenal. There's no way I'll be able to afford any of the coins in this auction, but having the catalog will allow me to read about the history of each coin. It will make for some interesting reading.
Nice! One of my goals for my numismatic library is to obtain the catalogs for the sales of some of the big collections: Eliasberg, Garrett, Bass, Newman, etc. This might be one of them, then. I'd also like to own a coin pedigreed from one of the great collections, but many of them tend to be very expensive, for good reason.
For those who didn't get the catalog: http://media.stacksbowers.com/poguecollection/pogue-coin-list.html Did a quick run through the list and I must say there are some good looking toners in the group. Some nice coloration on the gold coins as well. A lot of character to be seen, but no Morgans, no Indians, no Buffaloes--so what am I to do?
Imagine the joy of working at such auction house. Reckon the graders would have heart attack as soon as they held such coins in their hands. It's probably not easy to get into such field but maybe a career change would sound awesome. Honestly though... WOW is not enough to describe it.
Can you imagine how utterly cool it would be to have the money to be able to put together a collection like this.....or say Morgan's or any real gorgeous coins that the price is out of most peoples' reach? If I ever won a nice lottery I would buy at least one absolutely stunning coin tha I just could not resist just so I could drool over it for awhile.
Great goal to have, and Pogue is definitely one of them to add if you're looking for catalogs of legendary collections. I haven't received one, though. I'll have to remedy that. Be aware, however, that auction catalogs are extremely heavy. Make sure your bookshelf can support them. I had a minor collapse a few years ago that prompted me to revisit which catalogs I keep.
Wow, that's in a whole other universe of coin collecting. I am not worthy to even cast my gaze upon those coins!
Agreed. I received a bunch of them this year, mostly from Stack's. I do have a couple from Legend and one from Heritage. Most of the catalogs have interesting write ups about the "special" coins in the auction.
From what I've seen, this could be well into 9, count 'em, 9 figures for the entire collection (spanning a few auctions).
I was thinking the same thing Kenny. The Catalog I received is only for Part I. Part I consists of: Half Disme Half Dimes Dimes Quarter Dollars Half Dollars Quarter Eagles
Says here May 2017, so you have even longer to save up. Seven auctions for 650 coins. 32 1/2 boxes of 20 with an estimated value of north of $6 million per box. http://media.stacksbowers.com/PogueCollection/
Thanks for the correction John. I don't know where I got 2016. I just reread the forward by QDB and it doesn't mention the date.
