You'll hear no argument from me. That's what I meant by my comments - Shane did an excellent job of imaging the piece and because of his ability, the coin sold for its true value/grade rather than the plastic grade. I absolutely think the coin is a lock cameo and is a nice specimen despite the fact that it does not reside in a PCGS or NGC holder. I'm glad that it went to someone who appreciates it for what it is - a nice coin. And I also want to thank you for bidding on my consignment.
I had a friend send them a few coins to see if they were still around. No return of phone calls or emails. This company is a joke
You do realize the data from that survey is 12 - 13 years old... Yes, of course, but not many surveys include PCI. This one has its biases and flaws, as most surveys do, but I'll bet if you conduct a survey of numismatists today, most would rank PCGS and NGC at the top.
Yes, PCGS and NGC at top, and I personally prefer NGC for reasons other than the grading. I don't particularly care for PCGS's holder itself, their marketing claims and standards on "special label" coins (like allowing fly-ins) or frankly their snooty attitude. That said, their grading is superb. To me, and I write this as a former ANACS submitter, after the top two, there is a HUUUUUUUUUUGE falloff to absolutely every other TPG. To me, PCI has always meant Pass-up on Coin Immediately. This particular Kennedy is a honey, though.
When Shane puts images up on ebay you can bet they are really close to the actual look of the coin. He wants folks to see the coin they are bidding on. It's up to the buyer to decide if they are happy with the holder.
It's not a joke, it's not there. Probably, but considering there are only five services of any real size left (PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, and SEGS.) and SEGS is nowhere near as large as the other four it isn't that hard to be the top two out of four. The last time someone did one of these surveys it was the PNG, they poled their membership (all large dealers) and they had been recommending to them for two years prior that they should only use PCGS and NGC. Then they asked them what services they would recommend? Any surprise what the answer was.
Mr Bellman, you have literally taken the words from my mouth, the type from my keyboard, etc. Couldn't agree more on your PCGS vs NGC assessment.
I agree and that is why I bought it. I wonder what it would grade though. I would hope at least 67 and a 90% shot at cam. I am surprised no one commented on the grade or their thoughts thereof...
Ah they are good enough to get close anyway...Heck I bought it using pictures...not like I am beholden to it.

Probably, but considering there are only five services of any real size left (PCGS, NGC, ANACS, ICG, and SEGS.) and SEGS is nowhere near as large as the other four it isn't that hard to be the top two out of four. On the contrary, it would be incredibly hard for ANACS or ICG to crack the top two. PCGS and NGC are so far ahead of everyone else. Any ranking is almost unfair.
I would have bought that coin based on the sellers images but not yours...sorry but his looked better. I mean no offence and your photos are a world away from mine, I'm using a scanner
I see CAM as a lead pipe cinch - ALMOST DCAM. Only the number is at issue for me. My first thought is 67.
I am learning to take pictures, but CAMs are just plain horrible to get. A scanner is not practical for me but I am worlds better than I was. I bought a new camera to try and it was worse than my original. I am just through trial and error getting better. Yes his were much better, very much so which is why I bought it.....mine confirm the cameo which is a victory for me. It is possible to DCAM, and 67 was my thought also but I have been wrong before...Thanks for the input.
For whatever it might be worth to you, having actually handled the coin in hand, my best recollection is that I thought it was a very strong cameo and PF67. Maybe a 67* CAM, but granted it has been a few months since I have seen the piece.
I can deal with that. Like I said I was happy with it. I am learning and I would say that the pictures enhance the cameo a bit, either that or I have a few DCAMs on hand. I have two or three that are better in the cam dept. 67* is not bad at all.
Sorry to drag this old thread up, but I made a purchase of a coin recently with a slab saying "PCI Certified Capsule Coin Grading Service" with a 9 digit number and a barcode on it. As far as I've been able to determine, PCI went bankrupt several times and their websites are dead. Is there a way to lookup this 9 digit number/barcode anywhere online?
