1884 Snow-1 "star in shield" --new pickup

    I picked up this nice example of this variety the other day. It's a solid VF without any issues. This variety is paired with two obverse dies. One obverse die has MPDs, which I don't see on this coin.

    The "star in shield" is still prominent in this grade. Fortunately, the highpoint on the shield, which wears down first, is on the right.

    It's unknown what caused these marks. It would be easiest to damage the die with a sharp tool before it was hardened. Of course it's best in MS examples, but a lot of the details are there in my coin. I notice that my coin does not have the die crack across the top of the shield.

    Yes, although there were a couple other bidders. Still, got it for about normal VF30 price. :)

    Looks like a die crack/chip in that area.

    There could easily be some secondary chipping of the marks, but the strokes of the tool/object...cutting across the shield are quite plain. On the MS example, it's even possible to extrapolate the shape of the object that did this damage... :)
