I have saved so many pre-1982 copper pennies over the months. Right now I counted and had 644 copper pennies.
Currently, none (that I know of). It's illegal to melt them, so I don't save them en masse, and I don't have any in my collection.
I have 50 pounds of them in my closet... I figure if i melt it cool i make money, if i cant, its a rainy day fund
I used to have $200 F/V until I realized it was a waste of resources and turned them all in to the bank.
FurryFrog02 gets it! Total-total-total waste of time and energy saving non-Wheatie pre-1982s. But it's a free country, sort of. Even with only $200 capital, with judicious flipping, you should be able to triple your money in a year.
I accidently answered between 5000 and 10000, I should have answered over 10000, This has not much to do with metal prices, I am getting near the age when I might not have too much hobby money, those cents are going to be an inexpensive way to keep enjoying the hobby. Looking for omm and other varieties should keep me out of the pool halls.
I have over 10000, but it has nothing to do with their metal content. No one is going to get rich anytime soon from hoarding copper cents for the sake of the copper contents.
i have almost 20k coppers, got a 5 gallon bucket 3/4 full, when i fill it i'll start sellin them on ebay..
I have between 5000 and 10,000. Half or more are wheatiies. Plan to save more, so my kids can sell them for $1 and up to future collectors. Nowadays, you cant do a Lincoln set from pocket change. You have to buy Wheaties in bulk to fill your albums. My $50 bag of Wheaties cost me $75. Now its $220. Look in Coinage magazine, or on Ebay, and there are lots of people selling common date stuff for a bit over face value. One day, they will stop minting these coins. Many will be melted, and the remaining ones will slowly accrue in value. What does a common date large cent go for in Fine? $30? Copper trades at too low a value. You would have to deal in tons of it to realize any useful profits. Its not bulk metal value that makes them valuable, although that is the whole reason for a coins existence. It is the individual coin collector value that will make these coins worth a premium one day.
There is one fellow on the PCGS forums who has at least 9 - 50 gallon trash cans full. I've seen the photo. Chris
So far I have accumulated around 27,000 copper pennies. My goal is to reach 1,000,000. It's amazing what you can find floating through circulation...
Here's what one million pennies would look like: http://www.kokogiak.com/megapenny/six.asp A billion pennies would be the size of five school buses...
I have a pretty good sized trunk full, I was keeping all the nicer condition ones I found when looking for wheats and it turn in to a huge stash of probably over 10000+
