Got this Sestertius at the last Agora Auction. It is one of my heaviest and thickest coins I own. Ya gotta love a Fat Boy or in this case a Fat Girl: LUCILLA Æ Sestertius OBVERSE: LVCILLAE AVG ANTONINI AVG F, draped bust right REVERSE: VESTA, S-C, Vesta standing left, holding palladium and sacrificing with simpulum over lighted altar to left Struck at Rome, 161-161 AD 30.4 mm, 21.89g RIC 1779; BMCRE 1178
That's a nice big coin, and the detail on the reverse is comparable to that of the obverse. What frustrates me is that often the reverse detail on sestertii doesn't match the obverse - well, at least on the coins I can afford. This example is very nicely balanced.
Super cool pickup, big-bro (congrats) ... ummm, yah I have an example as well (do you mind?) ... I'm also a chubby-chaser!! Lucilla Sestertius 148-182 AD Lucilla & Juno with Peacock
I love it. I only have one Lucilla and although it is not very good, it was a coin that sang to me, I just love the reverse. Ruler: Lucilla Verus Coin: Bronze Sestertius LVCILLA AVGVSTA - Draped bust right FECVNDITAS S-C - Fecunditas seated right nursing child in arms, two children at feet Mint: Rome (161-166 AD) Wt./Size/Axis: 22.22g / 30mm / -
Great examples .... Mine are all 'petite' denarii.....and I have the same issue as JA...Damned fixed income and budget!!! LOL
Nice, I was gonna bid on it since there was no bids at the time but I opted for world silver. My only one of her.
Dare I insert it for the young and uninitiated? So tempting. Oh dear, such a dilemma. Not really as it is good copy......Let me get my headphones as the wife is slumbering.
awesome bing, i love fat coins and phat coins...and that on is both! how about a side or oblique pic of that sweetie? here's a recent fattie of mine i had to get a side shot on...
Terrific example Mat!! Far better details than you usually see...and that is awesomely FAT and PHAT....Mine doesn't display all that yours does so clearly...
