Are Gem raw examples very hard to find at shows or LCS (neither of which are around here) I'm not sure I know enough to try and pick them up on eBay but I want to collect a Dansco and really don't want to crack them out of slabs.
I was looking at an older box of large coins in Air-Tites and was surprised to find a silver Ike that I already had. I can't even remember when I got it. Regardless, here it is...
True Gems are only hard to find in 1971-P, 1971-D to a lesser extent, 1971-S BU Silvers, 1972-P T2s and 1976-P Type 1 Bicentennials. It might be hard to find these truly gem because a lot of people who deal in ikes will cherry pick these and get them graded if they are gem. I'm not trying to downplay the entire series either. If you really are looking for true Gems, the whole series can be a challenge depending on a number of factors (this excludes the proofs, and post 71,72 BU Silvers). That being said, you can certainly pick dealer albums and find Gems everywhere. But whether or not it's trully MS-65 or better is up to the buyer to know proper grading of Ikes. You can check out photograde or ikegroup for help with that.
Here's an example of a lot I bought and a couple of them are nice, but not all Gem. I posted it 19Lyds thread before I remembered there was this uber Ike thread.
I just sent five Ikes in for grading with a bunch of large cents. This is one of them. I know its not the highest grade, but I did like the tone on it. On the obverse you can see the textile print on it. I'm only into this one $4 plus the grading.
Haven't made a post in awhile, decided to start buying Ike's again and stumbled upon this gem. 71's are hard to find well struck, most look bald with bad hairlines and large contact marks but this one seems good for the grade and im happy to own it. Opinions welcome.....
Graded IKE do have a extra value toned but Grade and color scheme of toning is What makes the price go up Rainbow toning is the best black or brown toning is the bottom of price scale.
