Crowned while still in the womb Shapur II was one of the longest reigning monarchs in history, ruling AD 309-379. I found this neat little coin, the planchet is extremely small and the coin feels like a republic denari. As an added bonus the coin has the flaming head of Ahura Mazda in the fire altar. I thought that was great. Persia, Shapur II (AD 309-379) Uncertain Mint- Kabul? AR Drachm 20 mm x 3.49 grams Obverse: Bust of Shapur II right. Reverse: Zoroastrian Fire Altar with the flaming head of Ahura Mazda in flames, flanked by to attendants.
Just got reminded of the botched electric chair executions I was reading about the other day, thanks... (yeah I read about weird stuff sometimes). Nice coin Anoob
The reason the coin is small is because it was clipped. Silver was trimmed from the edges. Unclipped issues of that type weigh at least 4 grams.
Wow, Noober => that's a very cool addition (coingrats!!) Sadly, since purchasing this Peroz-I from Batman, I haven't purchased anymore fire-attendant coins (but I figured that Perry needed to stretch his legs ... so here he is once again for another curtain-call) Sassanian Kingdom, Peroz I AR Drahm Peroz I & Fire Altar Attendants ... yah, my example isn't nearly as edgy as your cool, new addition (congrats again)
TIF- The head is resting on top of the altar on the upper reverse field. Steve- That is a most excellent Peroz. I never get tired of seeing it.
