1867 3 cent nickel deep die crack

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by Eagles n Indians, Mar 12, 2015.

  1. just got this sweet 3 cent in today. From the looks of it the dies were improperly spaced causing weakness on the bottom half and a shattered reverse die. Just wanted to throw this out here for your thoughts. Thanks image.jpg

I see a misaligned Obverse Die. Maybe that's what you mean? And an amazing shattering. Imagine how it would of looked like if it kept breaking!

The reverse is 1 stage from being a retained CUD very neat :)

  5. Yes, the obverse is a little bit misaligned, but the strike is weak on the lower half of the obverse and upper part of the reverse, and the details are deep on the opposite. That would be cool finding the next few coins struck, if any. There would be some massive cuddage for sure.

Oh that makes sense. I can see that happening.

These dies must have been used well-past their "Best if used by" date. I haven't looked at mine in a long time but I know I have quite a few with cracks all over them, even on the obverse. Yours is pretty advanced. That die was ready to blow at any moment.
