Just curious. If so, how exactly is it possible? Can you see the mirrored fields thru the color?

I'm taking like older proof coins.

    The question is:

Can you see the frosted fields through the color?

This is the coin I seen and it made me wonder. It recently sold on eBay.

So on the Frankie half up there, what if the entire coin was toned, then how could you see it was proof like? The toned areas just look dark and not reflective.

    Absolutely.

In person, this coin has some beautiful, but dark toning and amazing contrast. Neither NGC's nor my own terrible iPhone pictures of it do it any justice. In hand, the cameo contrast is even more amazing than the pics show.

I would think so, using close ups....

I think you have the question backwards.

It should be: Can a cameo coin tone?

A cameo has frosted devices and mirror fields.

I have seen toned fields, but I personally haven't seen what tones frosting looks like?

    "Frosted fields", huh? ;)

    Ahem... devices.

    BigTee,

This is not to say it wasn't a valid question, but I wouldn't put much weight into that or really any generic photo.

I think you should look at more older proof coins in person. Proofs are hard to photograph; toned coins are hard to photograph; toned proofs are terribly hard to photograph.

I am not a big fan of toning to the point I could not see some reflective surfaces. Toning of some colors can be amazingly beautiful but heavy dark toning is very distractive to me. I would not be a good judge of heavily toned and spotted toned coins. The ones I posted would be more to my liking.

The real reason I'm asking is I sent mine off to NGC should be graded here by this weeks end and I'm looking at this seated proof wondering if mine could possibly be a Cam.

It really was hard to get this coin to show its color on camera.

Using the first pic I would say yes....the second..no. But I really do now know but that is one heck of a coin!

Most toning you can see through to the surfaces so I'd say yes . I'd love to see that '85 toned proof in hand or better yet own it . Beautiful coin .

I'll probably have to send it off to @robec just so I can show just how beautiful it really is. Don't know if my photography skills would do this coin justice.

Just hope it comes back as at least a 65.... I paid PF65 money for it lol

I agree. You need a better image to show the details and colors and luster. At this level of coin preservation, we just need the best of photos.
