It's been a heck of a week of cherrypicking for me! Stumbled across this one and after contacting shieldnickel.net, my suspicions were confirmed. The die crack from the right side leaf has developed into a cud... or close to it. I'm floored. It's going to be published on the aforementioned website asap. Unbelievable!!!

Very nice! Would you consider this an ALDS.....Almost Late Die State?

Here's a pic I took using an additional LED light. Shows the luster more accurately.

Nice find .....I love cherry picking shields "wiping the drool from lips" man that's one cool find! I thought I was scoring some nice Shields you my friend hit the jackpot !
Give a nickel for it :) ? Got to love the hunt.... But the finds are unreal.
Just one question ? When you found it did you know right off the bat you hit pay dirt? And.... I know 2 questions did you make an offer or just hand the dealer the money? 2 thumbs up.....

To answer your questions, I wasn't exactly sure it was the overdate when I bought it off of eBay. I saw something at the date, but wasn't sure. I just knew it was a nice coin for a fair buy-it-now price. After I bought it, I checked my Cherrypickers Guide and shieldnickel.net and convinced myself that I not only had a 1883/2, but that I had an unknown, very advanced die state. Then, when I got it in hand today... well, see for yourself. Pretty cool. Been trying to cherry this overdate for years!

To those not familiar with Shield Nickel Series this is a huge find! Hat's off to C-B-D..... for this find. I bet you feel like you are holding the single winning ticket on a power ball or mega millions $ 400,000,000.00 jackpot .
    Talk about a happy dance..,:greedy:

It's like holding a $2000-3000 lotto ticket, not 400 million, haha. In any case, it's gonna be even cooler to have furthered the study of these beautiful coins with a previously unknown die state.

Cbd did the seller know it was a overdate? 400 million is a huge score.

Based on his asking price, the seller did not know. And I myself wasn't absolutely sure until after I bought it and then took the time to research more. It was a high grade coin for very little money, so even if it wasn't the 1883/2, it would have still been a great deal for such a nice 1883.

C-B-D... Could you photograph your camera setup when you use you LED light, etc?

Perhaps you can take a photo using a cellphone.

    Thanks. Interesting coin!!!

    THANKS, C-B-D.

Where do you position your camera? Above the two black lamps?
What sort of lens are you using?
Do you photograph coin in mylar flip?

I take it out of the flip and use a coolpix s8200. I hold the camera by hand, just under the black lamps, towards the edge of the table slightly, which does mean I have to sort thru some blurry pics on occasion. Sometimes I have to lift the LED light in the back a bit higher, which can be an acrobatic act at times. It isn't the best, but it works for me.

Well, your photos are excellent. Few folks can get such solid images
using camera in hand. No matter that coin is shown at very slight angle.

Luster looks very nice, a good addition. : )
