Your thoughts on this person purposely Artificial Toning these Silver Eagles and selling on Ebay. Although he admits he AT's the coins in his description should he be doing this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/2014-Silver...1&pid=100005&rk=4&rkt=6&sd=201301965039&rt=nc
Why not? First, its his own private property that he can do with what he likes. Second, he admits he is toning them, so not trying to fool anyone. Third, its bullion, and if some sucker wants to pay high market for "toned" bullion coins, that is their problem.
If people want to tone coins or bullion, paint them, hologram them, clean them, or melt them, have at it. Its their property, they can do what they want with it.
Honestly, I wouldn't even care if he didn't admit that the coins were AT. That color scheme (purple & blue) is a tell tale sign of an AT coin and will never be market acceptable at one of the TPGs. Btw, how much of a premium is he getting over untoned ASEs?
I get that you can do what you like with your own property. My question would be why would you want to do this? Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
I think its pretty, much prettier than most nasty natural toning so many people want to pay so much money for. What IS toning? If you cay something like "a natural process..." you are wrong. Its corrosion, end of sentence. Did he do this one on purpose? Yeah, (I even think I know how he did it). So are the market fuddy duddies ever going to like it? No. But If you wanted a pretty coin I think this could fit the bill. Do I want to own it? Absolutely not. If he was doing this stuff to original capped bust halves or something I would be upset. He is not, though, he is doing it on a coin that in reality was created to someday be melted down. So what is the harm? Maybe this is his artistic side being expressed. I for one am not willing to judge.
Then he sells "Natural Toned" coins right next to the AT coins - Looks more like he left it in the boiled egg yolk bag a little too long!? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1992-Silver...828?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3aa3816aac
Boy, he REALLY sucks doesn't he? I could care less about the torch jobs, (which are kind of pretty), but seeing intentional NT performed so badly upsets me. A halfway trained monkey can do a better job on such a reactive coin like the ASE than this. Ugh. Its like he is not even trying.
Yep - and more power to the seller for thinking this up! You know - "A fool and his money are soon parted"! And usually it's a smart guy taking it
They are his coins and can do as he pleases , however I think this is just another black eye just like Coin Vault, HSN,etc whom prey on those whom are uneducated in numismatics . About a month ago I was working a coin show ,in walks a older short man with bags of coins. Under his arm a loose leaf binder. The binder was full of invoices over 10k! The bags filled with Granny Bait. The one set he had the 5 coin silver eagles set, that was the only item he had that was worth anything , and at that he over paid. The items he had were all Granny Bait! The cases that the junk were displayed were worth more than what was inside them! Working security at the show I helped him out to his car . I'll never forget the look on his face. Sad... and I know someone here will say he was a dumb smuck....to me he was someone's grandfather who heart was in the right place just uneducated in numismatics .
Yeah, I hear you. I have been in the same place as you sir, literally, working security at a show and having to help older people take home their garbage coins. I know how we wish to protect our hobby, but what if this same senior citizen had bought collectible plates, beanie babies, or an overpriced RV? I hate anyone getting scammed with overpriced coins, but the truth is if THEY didn't take the time to educate themselves about a market, they could have gotten scammed on anything, not just coins. That is what allows me to sleep at night as a collector, my belief it is still on the purchaser to make sure what they are buying is a good deal.
Oh I agree 100% still sad and true a fool and his money. I will say for the dealers here that I know are 100% honest! At least what I have seen at shows. They are honest and open when making offers ,or selling their inventory. But again ...I've seen people come in lay their money down on junk or never ask for a discount .
