Just won this coin, seller's pics modified for color correction. I think this specimen would pretty much qualify for Best of Type, or at least close. What do you think?
I'm surprised the bidding didn't go higher on this coin. Granted, there isn't as much demand for Theodosian Dynasty coins, and these Concordia types are better minted than others, but still...I expected to pay more. This coin will join his brother in my collection, the other CONCORDIA AVGGG type, which is more typical grade-wise...
His provincial lot went cheap too. Almost bid on it too but eh. Won some more french silver 5 francs from the 1800s I wanted for years now. So it isnt a bust today.
Very nice, I will say that looks like one of the best of that type I have seen. How much did you pay?
Hello JA, I love it a real bot, would you show sellers pic, so i can see and learn. All the best, Eric
Here's a link to the auction. I've bought from this seller before, a few times, so I've learned that his white balance isn't adjusted correctly - there's too much blue in the spectrum. It's no big deal - I don't expect sellers to image their coins correctly since they have so many to sell. All I need to see are the details and surfaces... eBay link
I'd agree it may be best of type. That sure is a scrawny necked portrait for a ruler history records as so strong. Mine is a different mint and shows him a bit better fed. The coin, however, is nothing like yours. My best Theodosius is an AE4 but I really prefer the AE2 types with military portraits. Like your Siscia, mine has the underfed ruler.
that is excellent indeed JA, looks like it even has some silvering on it sill? i found one that may just edge it out for the top spot by a hair, but look how much it went for.... http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1873342 nice grab!!!! now that i look at them some more..i don't know, yours may edge this one out.
Huh, well, the acsearch coin is better struck in a few places, but it's got some serious scratches on the reverse. I think someone wanted that coin much, much more than its market value.
Those are lovely coins, Doug. The VICTORIA is superb! I like your classification of busts according to how well they're fed.
Awesome Theo, JA ... => Roma has fantstic facial features (great eye-appeal) I guess it's actually Concordia, no? (the seller had "Roma holding globe" listed)
