Greetings again! After much searching I found this nice AE-2 with a sandy patina. I asked the seller to reserve it. He also said he would drop the price to $100. How did I do?
Very cool lookin' coin ... sadly, I still don't have an example to toss-into your thread (great eye-appeal on that baby!!) man, I love the reverse ... very cool (congrats!!)
i'm not familiar with MM's coins, i went looking around to compare and stumbled across where you purchased the coin. it was the best looking one at the site, that's for sure. grats to you MM!
Thanks Guys! What really sold me on this coin was that stunning obverse! It is harder to acquire bronze coins of Magnus Maximus than his Silver Siliqua issues. And this coin is proof of that; it must have took me three hours to find it.
Not really... and I shouldn't have poked (gentle) fun... I was just amused that three hours constitutes a "long time" . Ask Doug how long he's been hunting for certain coins.
When it comes to ancients, we can always get nitpicky if we want, but hey, just look at mine and be happy with yours .
It is a good looking coin which I would like better if the officina letter were more on flan but I have a stronger interest in full identification than most people. The obverse is as pretty as I recall seeing. I have no idea what these go for. I have had both of mine for over 20 years. There are coins you look for for years and coins that find you when you did not know they even existed. Sometimes the last group is more fun.
I must be missing something. Are Mag Max coins that rare? I mean, I don't see a $100 coin otherwise. Someone please enlighten me (I'm not the brightest kid in class ya know).
Bing, I have good ol' Mag-Max sitting at 82 (old scale) => 84 (new scale) on the ERIC-II rarity list ... whatever that is worth (at least it is one data point)
It's not difficult to find low to medium-grade bronzes of Mag Max. The OP coin is unusually attractive and I think $100 is good price, for the obverse alone. The siliquae are much better crafted, but quite pricey. At any rate, I think he's one of the easier emperors to acquire if you're looking to work your way down the ERIC rarity list.
You are not the only one Bing. Its definitely nice for sure but I wouldn't pay $100 for it. More like $65 at most to me (don't get me wrong Mag Max I still like your coin, just not at the price you got it for).
Thanks for backing me up. I thought I was missing something, and, like you, I think it's a nice coin. But $100........ But, on the other hand, any coin is worth whatever a buyer is willing to pay I suppose.
I am a firm believer in a coin is worth what someone will pay. As Chris already said, this was the nicest example on Vcoins. I still value your input Bing and VK, so thank you very much! On another note. I have become addicted to buying Late Roman Bronze and Silver!!!!
