I always check the Coinstar coin return slot when I visit the grocery store, and yesterday I was especially lucky finding this group of Lebanese and Syrian coins. All are from the last 15 years and I didn't have any of this type before. It's a nice unexpected addition to my collection. Scan.jpg Scan2.jpg

I don't know if it's "trying to pass them" so much as throwing any/all random coins in a jar and forgetting them... eventually dumping the whole jar in a machine.

Most of the time if I find something it's one penny, or a Mexican coin. This is the best foreign haul I've had. I figure it must be someone from Lebanon or Syria who put them in there.

When I was able to drive, the local bank always looked out for me and would save silver, clad proof coins, as well as paper currency. Silver certificates, red seals etc .... Only three times did I get silver charge back from a store "Roosevelt, 1945 p Nickel and 64 JFK form a stranger working the cashier gave me a 64JFK because it was my birthday.

The QuickChange Coin Counter at my CapitalOne Bank branch also has a reject slot. I have known the tellers so many years so they hold all foreign and rejected coins for me. So when I stop in to do a transaction they give me the reject coins! Got a Broadstruck Cent once!

Once I got a clad Balboa from a person behind the counter who was using the coin to rub scratch tickets. That was cool.

Another time having a bond father and kids time at a pizza place, an nice elderly msn gave my kids UNC $ president gold colored coins. Some good folks in our world.

Two years ago I found a 1861 New Zealand penny in Coin Star or my bank coin exchange machine. It's worth checking out When you see one.

It's worth checking. A local bank which is inside some grocery stores in the area has their own change machines, and theirs have a flap covering the coin return, so you have to stick your hand inside to check. I always feel like someone's going to yell at me, but I still check it (and no one has ever said anything).

... and remember, the first identified 1955 DDO Lincoln cent came out of a vending machine. It was one of 2 cents in change wrapped with a pack of cigarettes that cost 25 cents.

Ignore the photo quality. Took this with cell phone in bad lighting. I found this left on top of the coinstar machine. I asked 5 co-workers whose ages ranged from 18-45, if they knew what it was. 4 had no clue. 3 of the 5 asked me what country it was from. 1 said it looked like a dime but could not identify what kind. 1 said it was solid silver, but had never seen one like it before. I wonder how long it set on the coinstar counter and how many people ignored it as the passed by.

Sadly true. Hand a clerk at cash register at Wal-Mart or any store $1.00 coin Any Clad or Golden.
I always check the CoinStar and the Banks coin counter reject box.

I've been checking the Coinstar machine at my local supermarket since this thread started. To date . . . nada. What am I doing wrong? :D

It might be a known spot and others are beating you to it? I dunno. Try another location and maybe your luck will change.

Or maybe I need to put this location under surveillance. The Coin Star machine is easily visible from the produce section, so I'll just slip into my trusty pineapple disguise and do a stakeout.

The more they play with their electronic toys the more brain-dead they become. I have to bring an 1875 seated dime/capped bust half dime coin with me to show what I'm looking for at yard sales and they ask me what country they're from? I've found some pretty nice stuff once in a while. Great quote: "Even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while".....
