Maybe a movement should be started to eliminate all the speculation? No, but a movement should be started to get rid of the series all together.
Yep, Reagan is included only because some representative lobbied the mint for his inclusion. So, I say incude all the shills, living or not, and update the series every 4 to 8 years for future shills.
I think Commemorates are exempt from the law. I also heard that the Presidential $1 coin act would have to be amended in order to include any presidents post- George W. Bush. I think the law says a person can't appear on circulating coinage until 2 years after their death, in this case the Roosevelt Dime, Kennedy Half, and Eisenhower Dollar would all be in violation
Yes, the law that created these particular dollars is Public Law 109-145, part of which is nicely summarized on Wikipedia of all places (see attached grain of salt)... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_$1_Coin_Program So I think if all the current living presidents were to cease to exist today, none of them would get a coin unless Congress acted to do so. In other words, there is no provision in the current law to make it happen. The Coin World article that is foot note 10 in the wiki quote can be found at ... http://www.coinworld.com/news/reagan-presidential-dollar-and-first-spouse-gold-for-2016.html#
In order to get coins, Clinton would have to die by May and Dubya would have to die by September. Carter and Bush 41 are already ineligible.
Thanks jlogan. Also found this tidbit of info in an article found at... http://mentalfloss.com/article/28312/money-everything-you-ever-wanted-know-about-coin-portraits The law that makes some reference to no living person blah blah blah... https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/31/5112
I wouldn't worry about this too much since it'll end next year unless someone decides to do the living presidents.
Your patriotism is showing! LOL! But really, Whats so bad about having a living president on a coin series intended to honor the Presidents?? I mean, that was the point right? Or was the point, as the law states, "....to improve circulation of the $1 coin,.."?? You'd think they'd have learned after 200 years that whenever a paper alternative is available that merchants will go for the paper each and every time! Those folks that are so protective of the Jefferson Nickel with Montiello on the reverse ought to be happy that the Federal Reserve Bank doesn't decide to issue 5 cent bills or any type of fractional currency. But then, that would eliminate any questions regarding raising sales taxes by 1/4 of a percent or 1/2 of a percent! Where does that other 3/4 and 1/2 percents go?
From the actual law, which can be found here: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/PLAW-109publ145/html/PLAW-109publ145.htm , it states: "(E) Limitation in series to deceased presidents.-- No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President." I don't think there is any law regarding issuing a coin with the likeness of a living person on it. Of course, George Washington didn't want his image on a coin and he expressed that specifically to Congress, soooooo, they just waiting until he was good and dead before saying, sorry, it's gonna happen cause that's what "we" want.
There's going to be a few people upset regardless of what is done. We supposedly live in a democracy where the majority rules,. We've become far to concerned about what the few want. Edited. This thread is quickly going political and I would hate to see people get into problems, so do not take any political sides as to individual presidents.
#1 or 3. I don't know what the artists doing #5-8 were drinking or smoking or taking, or what they were looking at.
Well 1 and 3 I like the best but do not believe they would translate to a coin...how are they going to color his hair so much darker than the rest of the coin. So then I would have to go with 6 as a coin design...or will the Reagan dollars be colorized? Could they show designs based on the gold tone of the presidential dollars so it would be more representative?
They're all based on photographs. For example I think #6 was drawn off this official portrait. Which is not to say that they're great renderings. But then, even the ones that look better as B&W line drawings won't necessarily translate well to coin sculpture.
You can discuss the program, the guiding laws, whether it should be continued, stopped, or altered, but NOT whether any specific President should or should not be included or not. That is political and will result in infractions or more. Thanks
The program, as it nears it's end, and the laws having room for interpretation (can you skip, how long dead / or even dead) is the basis of the conversation. So "Which president can/should be on the Presidential Dollar?" requires us to discuss which Presidents should be on the coin. The name of the thread is asking if Ronald Reagan should and which design...Ronald Reagan (specific president name in the thread)...skipping Jimmy Carter...if we skip one can we skip others? Should we skip at all and allow Jimmy Carter. Names of Presidents and discussing if they should/should not be included is part of the debate....not political. Now, if we get into a big debate over the reasons a president should or should not be on the coin, that would become political. So, should Obama be on a coin if the legislation does not require the person to be dead? (non political). Should Obama, as the first president of color, be honored? (non political). Should Obama because of his work with Pelosi to force the ACA on the public creating national health care? (political). So we will not discuss the Reason we believe specific president should be honored. However, the title of the thread, and the nature of the thread, requires us to discuss specific presidents and if the law as it is written for the program would allow that specific president to be on a coin.
Really? I'm afraid I can't agree with you, I thought some of them were using that photo as reference based on what I saw on some of the designs.
