MCM vs. Apmex

I ordered one of my new silver one ounce coins from APMEX recently and have gotten the rest from MCM. I was NOT impressed with APMEX shipping, my coin in a flip floating around in a thin bubble envelope and subject to damage. Not even the invoice wrapped around it. On the other hand my coins from MCM have each coin sealed in a corrugated mailer with the invoice wrapped around it and a heavy bubble mailer. I was considering shifting between the two depending upon pricing but now I have some doubts. How have your purchases been shipped and were you satisfied. I don't use Provident so know nothing about them.

Every once in a while, someone gets riled and instead of taking the complaint to the source, they post a rant on one of the coin forums. I remember this happening a few years ago when someone did just this on the NGC forums. Their complaint was about Modern Coin Mart. Little did this person know that John Maben had a long history with NGC, and he reads the forums quite regularly.

Anyway, John responded to the complaint and was the complete gentleman in his demeanor. I've always remembered this.

The stuff I've got from Apmex has been too securely packaged for my taste. It's tough to get the boxes open. I don't know what kind of adhesive they use, but it's very strong.

I thought it was just me turning into an old man and not being able to open it up.

I was please with my last APMEX order.

Nothing went wrong with the order, the coin was received in good condition. And a one coin order is not worth a complaint to the company. I was simply not impressed with the packaging and soliciting opinions. Not ranting and sorry if it came across that way. Maybe the caps gave that impression.

Tommy, I wasn't suggesting that you were riled. It's just that the topic made me think of the John Maben incident and what a lasting impression it made on me.

You're welcome. I finally ordered the 3 Canadian silver birds of prey series - 69$ total shipped from Aydin.

JM bullion has really decent prices - how about their shipping? And where are they located in the US?

I've never had an issue although I've never really purchased only a single bullion coin from either company at a time. They probably don't view the coins as collectibles instead rather what they are as bullion. I guess the shipping costs would determine if it bothered me or not.

Minimum order is a $100, but all orders ship for free! They are located in Dallas TX

    OK, thanks for the info!!

  17. MCM usually has better prices and in my experience has better customer service and shipping. I used to always order from Apmex but have not purchased from them in years. I also like Provident Metals but their bullion inventory is not as good and they are lacking on eBay.

i use MCM a lot, very pleased and never a problem, always free shipping, they also host a coin forum where you can talk directly to john maben and others of his staff, i did see a few times where someone was displeased and posted it on the forum and john or someone from the staff resolved it quickly to the full satisfaction of the customer, i use provident as well but they are usually very slow to ship, i've also used apmex quite a bit and have been pleased, but as stated earlier, i struggle a bit getting my stuff unpackaged..

I noticed a new packing tape lately that is very hard to get undone w/o a pocket knife. Amazon has been using it, its black with tyvex filaments in it.

Are you sure you didn't get the packaging backward? From APMEX I get a white bubble pack glued to the inside of a rolled corrugated package. It's overkill, but I don't mind it. I know it would take a lot to damage the coins.

I've also received many coins from MCM too. There packaging is good, but not the Ft. Knox pack sent by APMEX.

I've no issues with either company in any way.

Right on the white APMEX bubble pack but it was very thin compared to the MCM bubble pack. Yep, MCM used the corrugated inside mailer.
