At first I thought this coin took an extra long couple of rides in the dryer and I was just going to toss it into the spender pile but then upon closer inspection I noticed the Date has a "0" at the end so it reads 19630, the "L" in liberty is sitting by itself on the rim, the last "T" in trust is gone, "GOD" is unevenly spaced, and I'm sure I've missed more and I haven't even started with the errors on the reverse. I know dryers can't cook the letter "P" square in the center of the reverse on the steps of the memorial, which by the way, looks like its been razed. I need help with this coin. Let me know if you'd like me to take any additional pictures of specific areas. Here you go with no further ado:
It looks like someone tried to make "penny smoothie" by dropping it in a blender. Who knows, It could have been dropped in garbage disposal. The possible ways it was damaged are endless, except one thing for sure is it is not done at the mint.
looks like Lincoln has the flesh eating condition .. I would of been dumb for even checking date .. why bother photographing it , or wasting our time posting it
Since when is helping someone by answering their question a waste of time? That is what this forum is for, not for insulting someone for asking.
I too was going to toss this reject, but I took a closer look at it---explain how that "0" got there at the end of the 1963 also, look at the reverse, did that "P" on the steps of the LM get mangled onto there via truck running over the penny? what should be a "U" in pluribus is an upside down "R". I agree the coin is destroyed but how and where did these letters/numbers get onto the coin? Also, it looks like there's a "5" on the rim of the coin after the date so now the date eads 1963 followed by a "0" and then a "5". Also take a closer look at the 9 in the date is that DDO and what about the mint mark--it looks like it didn't get struck correctly and it looks like the letter"L". Please take a closer loook aqt his coin before you start with any further comments like this coin looks like a melted hershey bar---that's mine All I'm saying is there's more to this coin than can be explained by being run over by a truck, took one too many rides in the dryer, took one too may acid baths, etc. Or am I just seeing things on this coin?
No, I don't think you are seeing things, but I do think everything is a result of the damage. Metal pushed around by dings, dents and cuts look like something else. The "P" on the steps of the Lincoln memorial is the most convincing, but even that upon close examination looks like displaced metal.
This is one of the real challenges when looking for things like doubled dies, mint mark varieties, and repunched dates (on older coins). When a coin is sorta banged up, it's often hard to filter out what is "noise" (damage), from the "signal", ie how it left the mint. If the "noise" gets big enough, it may start looking indistinguishable from the coin's details--and your eyes easily fill in the blanks. It's kind of like this picture--can you see how the noise starts becoming part of the signal? If you stare at this picture long enough, you might start seeing letters elsewhere...
I appreciate your time and effort in looking at the coin a second time and giving me your best educated opinion! If it was just for the things that are supposed to be on that coin and are just distorted/out of place/mangled/etc. I wouldn't have even bothered taking pictures and asking questions. but when you start seeing what look to be letters and numbers where they shouldn't be in the first place, that's when I'm shrugging my shoulders and scratching my head. And I get what KurtS conveyed regarding signal and noise (thank you KurtS), I guess we'll never know what happened to this coin and what was done to defile its existence??? Thanks again to everyone that chimed in!!!
I have seen other pennies treated like this, and it looks like it was put in a blender or some other machine. You really can't tell about it being a variety because of all the damage. Spend it.
This coin has been on the ground in a parking lot or something similar. This coin was beat up after it left the mint, plain and simple.
Actually I have one that is exactly the same and in really good shape l in liberty is printed on the rin so don't think it's damage but I'm no expert I just know that mine looks just like yours as far as where the letters are
Everything seen in the photos posted was done after it left the Mint. These are parking lot and road coins. It is only damage. As yours is also.
And after being dead for 4 1/2 years the thread arises Happens even to us old timers, got to check the dates on the bottom! Jim
