The last time I was in Carson City (a LONG time ago - about 20 years) the old mint had been turned into a museum. In the museum there was a display of one of EVERY silver and gold coin ever minted there. They were mounted vertically between two sheets of very thick lucite. Does anyone know if that display is still there?
Yes it is. I was there last year. These are just a few of the displays, they have quite a bit more. It's definitely worth the trip if you're in the area
It's also been 20 plus years since I was at the Carson City museum. Then they claim that all coins were real. But about 2004 I was told that they have replaced real with copy to protect them from being stolen. I wonder if has been done. I never seen anymore about this. Anyone know???
You know me I will ask I did back then. Real was reply. But years later I read that the security was a issue and America historical items. Maybe they don't want any to know ? That is a good defense and cheaper.
Is the 1873-CC trade dollar holed...? I guess that answers the question about counterfeits replacing authentic coins.
I see the hole now but that may not be one their there first year it opened. Otherwise I would not have said anything.
