    Maybe/Maybe not.

At the very minimum, the basic grading fee is saved.

I submitted a raw one to PCGS. It was designated AH with no added cost.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

NGC will automatically attribute the variety at no extra charge, but to make sure they do, list the variety on the order form so they won't miss it.

    Ethan,

    While you're at it, make sure you check out the early Kennedy business strikes in addition to the proofs. There are;

    1964 business OBV-002 paired with both RDV-001, RDV-002
    1964 D business strike OBV-002 paired with RDV-001, RDV-002
    1964 proof OBV-001 paired with RDV-001 and OBV-002 paired with both RDV-001 and RDV-002
    1968 S, 1969 D, 1970 D all have OBV-002 paired with both RDV-002 and RDV-003
    1971 OBV-002 and OBV-003 both paired with RDV-004
1972 S - there are either two rev die styles or two die stages, one has flat tops on the letters, and one has round topped letters
With the SMS and other proof and business strikes, there are at least 30 die pairings to collect for the early (64-72) Kennedys.

    Have fun

    Ethan,
    IMHO
If it were any other 90% silver coin, the AH and transition dies would be priced through the roof. I have 12 '64 Kennedy proofs I picked up at the LCS. 10 were AH, 1 is a transitional and 1 was neither.
I'm holding them until interest/prices go up accordingly.
Hope I live that long. :woot:

All in all even if not that rare, I can not believe they are as common as the T2/T2. So I have had some fun and I will keep them. However from this point on I will still call them Accented Hair's Little Brother.......Maybe one day it will stick.

Just bought some 64 Proof Sets. (5) Unopened.

Guess what I have found? One Accented Hair's Little Brother........I am happy.

Well out of 7 sets (5) unopened, I got lucky and found 3 Accented Hair Little Brother, 3 Cameo quarters (1 looks DCAM but I did not cut it out), 3 cameo dimes, and it appears 2 Cameo halves. Good Haul.

That being said, finding so many ACLB makes me wonder a bit. I got lucky in that I must have got a group that was very early in the mintage time. I looked with a loupe and found no double dies etc so that was sad.

Either way I am happy and I feel like I have expanded my knowledge of these. Maybe they are as common as some have said...

With that being said, why does ANACS slab them as a variety? They are the variety experts right?

I would say ANACS is far from being the experts with varieties. For the right amount of money, I think ANACS would probably grade what ever you want or put what ever you want on the label - just look at the "Coin Vault".

Now, as far as the 1964 RDV - 001 is concerned, it is about as rare as the RDV - 002 is. I mean when you get above a 15 or 16 on the "Universal Rarity Scale" it all becomes a moot issue anyway.

Yeah, the book is dated but still it makes sense when you consider the proofs only

Well I had the chance to cherry pick 16 sets. There was no AH nor his little brother. All I found of worth to me was one cameo quarter. This is not checking for DDO's however as time was an issue. These AH Little Brothers just might be more rare than we think.

At first I was convinced they are more rare than the AH itself, however since I found that I had some of them raw plus the ones I bought, I now think this is not the case, at least I lean that way. I do however think they are scarce and by that I mean if the AH is 100,000-120,000 mintage, these might be in the range of 250,000 or so.

Anyhow, that is what I am going with now. It is time for a new Kennedy book to be written....we have enough Lincoln books...

    :)

Most likely they do not have an expert that can verify the variety or they do not agree it is a variety.

Remember they are allowed to have an opinion too.....

Agreed but it is known now, the only unknown is how many. You see the NGC and PCGS do not recognize it but ANACS does...there is something to it..

It's too minor for NGC or PCGS to care about.

The 1964 RDV-001 and RDV-002 have been known from probably day one. There is no premium between the two so why worry about weather it is recorded on the label or not?

In 1968, the Kennedy half dollar had a third design chance on the reverse, (Reverse Die Variety) RDV-003 (Straight G) versus the (Flared G) of RDV-002. Again, no premium between the two so it would be a waste of time and money trying to get the major TPG companies to note the difference on their labels.

There have been several other changes to the design of both the obverse and reverse over the years on the Kennedy half dollars and besides the 1964 Accented Hair design of ODV-001 none of them carry a premium in value (until 2014 between the clad coins from the 50th Anniversary Sets and the Obverse Die Variety found in the rolls, bags and 2014 standard uncirculated Mint Sets) so I just don’t understand your point.

I wouldn’t even consider the 1964 RDV-001 as being a “second cousin” to the 1964 ODV-001 (Accented Hair) let alone as it’s “Little Brother”.
